Hi,

I just fitted new Ohlins front and rear. I find it hard to fine tune them according to the OHLINS manual. Particulary the difference between the bike on the centerstand and the bike on both wheels without/with rider: I don't get those low figures (R1-R2, R1-R3, F1-F2 and F1-F3 for those who know the manual). Mine are much higher even with all of the preload wound up. I spent a fair amount of time measuring and remeasuring with my dad and it's driving me nuts.
The online manual (GSOIAv1) isn't much of a help either. Conclusion is that my spring is too soft, and I have the stiffer 160nm spring. I weigh 86 kilos wich is not that heavy is it? This seems impossible.
How do you guys fine tune Ohlins on an 1150 GSA?

Tnx for the feedback.

Well I'd be interested to here any answers on this having just fitted a pair to mine :)

To set up the preload:

Rear

1 get the rear wheel off the ground
2 measure from the centre of the wheel spindle to a fixed point directly above the spindle for example a pannier rail
3 roll the bike off the centrestand and measure between the same two points and note this measurement (B)
4 subtract B from A and note down the figure - you are aiming for between 5 to 10mm
5 once you've got to somewhere between these figures sit on the bike, bounce the suspension up and down and let it settle, then with your feet off the ground with your riding gear on - a summer tip weigh your gear get a ruck sack fill it with anything to get it to the same weight as your gear - saves you getting too hot - again measure between the same two points and note this down (C)
6 subtract C from A and note down the figure - you are aiming for around 25% to 33% of suspension travel which on an 1150 GSA is 220 mm so your aiming for 55mm to 73mm
7 it's worth noting that small adjustments to the measurement as described in point 3 will have a larger impact on to the measurement as described in point 6

Hope this helps

Dave

To set up the preload:

Front

1 get the front wheel off the ground
2 measure from the centre of the wheel spindle to the top yoke
3 roll the bike off the centrestand and measure between the same two points and note this measurement (B)
4 subtract B from A and note down the figure - you are aiming for between 20 - 30mm
6 subtract C from A and note down the figure - you are aiming for around 25% to 33% of suspension travel which on an 1150 GSA is 210 mm (front) so your aiming for 52mm to 69mm

Whatton

your figures are

Front travel 190mm
sag with rider 47-63mm

Rear travel 200mm
sag with rider 50-66mm

all the rest is the same as above

Don't forget these are guidelines and are not set in stone
I am assuming suspension travel remains the same with the Ohlins fitted if not the percentages are the same
