Oil and filter change?

Hi spring is round the corner and I'm contemplating changing the oil, filter if she has one and plugs on my 2001 1150 GS and wondered if anyone can point me in the right direction with what oil and plugs I might need.
Any help appreciated.

Buy an Original BMW or a Mahle filter do NOT buy those schite Hi-Flo filters

3.8 litres of good quality 20W50.

Basically they are schite construction and as most folks are afraid that the filter will fall off they horse it up as tight as they can


When it actually is only hand tight and then plus 3/4 turn (AS A ROUGH GUIDE!)

both filters that i had to cut out of peoples bikes were Hi Flo every other one I have been able to get out (including those stupid K&N ones with the nut spotted on!! WTF???)

Both of the hi flo one spun between the flat metal bit at the base and the outer can, even steppers screws and sandpaper were useless and I had to cut the tin away to get at the metal plate and devise another method of spinning it

Mahle Knecht and BMW are all good and have never caused any problems even with the wee man who horsed his up so tight it buckled that threaded metal plate :eek

If you fancy a spin to Keighley one weekend/afternoon I'll show you how to do it (Millers Oils near to where I live and is ***the best oil*** About £35 for 4 litres though. All you'd need is a filter & plugs).

Tea is free in good ol' Yorksha.

You could get what you need from Steptoe or Motorworks.

Got a genuine one from my local BMW dealer yesterday, first one i have bought and it seemed to be a lot more solid (thicker metal?) than the hundreds of car filters i have changed. Presumably to resist the crap thrown up by the wheel? Maybe the pattern ones aren't as 'over engineered'?.

Aluminium sealing ring though?? Seem to remember reading bad reports about aluminium versus copper but can i hell as find the info again. Any thoughts gents?
The dealer remained tight lipped and wouldn't be drawn into the conversation when i queried aluminium v copper. That's what they use in the workshops apparently.

The only filter with flimsy bodies are the Hi-Flo filters. Crap. Also crap are the K&N oil filters. For the same reason.

If you intend to keep the ali washer in place for 10 years it may have corroded enough to start a weep of oil. Otherwise don't waste everyones time asking questions or deliberating about the pro's and con's of a copper washer versus an ali washer.
Especially as the bmw engine case where the washer contacts is also made of ali, along with the sump plug - of it was a metal sump, then you may have a point, and even then a very very very very small point.

Mentioned from the off that i couldn't find the info again, if indeed it was on here. Yessss i searched it before "wasting everybody's time".
From memory i recall it was a problem with the ali breaking up rather than corroding away. And as it is the sealing washer on the lowest part of the engine that keeps the oil in...... i figured it was worth asking the question. The sump and plug are thick and chunky items compared to the very flimsy little washer.
Mr Steptoe you have had a lot of praise on here recently- is it going to your head?
