I'm just about to do my first ever oil change on the GS despite this being my third GS!

As I look at the oil drain plug I can see that the exhaust and sump guard are all very likely to get covered in oil when draining. Is this normal or is there a way around it?

Also how far can I expect the oil to spurt out when the drain plug is removed?

Whats the best type of container for catching the oil?

:thumb

I use an old washing up bowl to catch mine.
Then pour it into old Milk containers to take it to the tip

Cheers, Piggers

So does it end up draining all over the exhaust?

Not on my 1200 on the centre stand, just a small bit on the sum shield that can easily be wiped away.

you have to take the sump guard off to access the drain plug & change the filter.

to avoid the guard getting covered in oil, move it further away

Like Cookie says, take the sump guard off and remember how the bolts and washers are arranged (they always seem to confuse me when I'm trying to put em back on.....is it me?) It doesn't spurt out, just falls out. You'll get some oil (remember it'll be warm) on the hand you use to unscrew the plug unless you're as fast as the Wako Kid. Just make sure you have some old rags to hand. Piece of cake, once you've done it you'll never pay anyone else to do it again!

I assume you have the special tool for taking off the filter? Please check that the rubber o-ring comes off with the old filter. Mine have had a habit of hanging onto the bike. If you don't remove it you'll not get a proper seal with the new one.

BTW though i use a proper drain pan, which must be 18" across, i still put a broadsheet newspaper down to catch the inevitable splashes :)

oh, and you have got the tool to undo the oil filter, haven't you?

Are you looking at the drain plug ????????????????????? it's under the engine.

- you can't see it with the sump plate still attached, and the oil goes nowhere near the exhaust when you drain it - in fact you can't remove the sump plug with the sump plate still attached

i did try & hint at that. perhaps the more straightforward approach will be more effective :)

Im looking at the big hex bolt on the right side of the bike as you sit on it!

Is that not the drain plug?

Perhaps I should leave it for the dealer! :eek

The bolt your looking at isn't the drain bolt .

Get a workshop manual - before it all ends in tears -

Oh my god! I am a complete mechanical Numpty!

Just rang Clarkes its booked in for Saturday.

Just out of interest what would I have done by removing large bolt? :nono
