Oil Changes, how often?

On other bikes, particilarly after a long, hot tour, I have tried to change oil and filter after 3000 mls or a.s.a.p.

Any opinions on oil change periods for the 1200GS.

Magnetic sump plugs??

Long tours are perfect for engines and oil. Why the need to change the oil early ??

It's short stop and start, hot and cold journeys that make oil deteriorate.

I commute in and out of London on mine, that's why I changed mine 3000 miles after the man above me did it for me at the 18000 service. I shall continue to do the engine, gerbox and bevel box oil at that sort of interval while I'm maltreating the engine in this way.

Engine oil? Gearbox oil? Bevel box?

Umm, sorry to sound dumb, but i've only got one oil hole on by bike, and thats on the left hand cylinder head?

What gives?

It`s a joke,isn`t it ?? :rob :rob

For those who do actually understand the concept of changing engine/gearbox and bevel oils on a GS,I change the engine oil twice as often as recommended (ie,at 3000miles) and the filter at recommended 6000 mile intervals, along with the gearbox and bevel oil.

Every 1000km on the Urals :D

That will every other breakdown then :D

:D

That`s funny, but not as funny as the fact that they`re in daily use in all weathers and also used for rallies around the country and haven`t broken down. :rob

1200GS anyone ? :augie

with respect Chris, for this may p!ss you off / but it's not my intention.
the phrase RTFM comes to mind.

i just did two searches -
one for "oil change" - got 117 results.
one for "oil" got about 500 results:eek:

its got to the point that the topic of oil is a tired old joke at this stage.

the advice i would give to ANYone;
if you look in the handbook or a manual you'd find out rapidly the basic advice / recommendations.
then you can adjust the timing of oil changes to your own liking / bike useage etc.:thumb2

it's not condescending.
its just that it does get wearing when people dont apply their own brain first and ask the "collective" last.

fair enough?:nenau
yours sincerely,

oil changes.

Why would any one put new clean oil through an old oil filter?.
dave (baffled) GS.

cos its the oil that breaks down and not the filter, the filter will be easly up to the service interval reccomended, if your doing short runs, the oil will not have time to burn off the water vapour, or if it gets to hot, it will break down, but the filter will still filter :thumb2

Nope.

I think you forget that i've only had the bike since november and its only needed 1 service which was done at garage.

Rather than coming across as condescending, how about you help me out?

I`ll help out anyone who has a go for themself and then encounters difficulties,as most here will verify.

Someone who hasn`t even bothered to familiarise themself with their bike`s construction and service requirements after six months of ownership, opens the door to whatever condescending comments seem apt at the time.

This kind of total ignorance and treating a bike as if it`s a company fleet car really is fecking this site up big style.

Here, here.

I would rather not become embroiled in this, however, some of us do ask for advice from those whom we assume know more about the beast than ourselves, an error perhaps.

Are the ascerbic comments really necessary?

I ask for advice because I need to check, to confirm or just to feel that I am about to embark on the correct course of action.

Perhaps I should return to asking the service dept. at the local BMW agent. They may think that I am a fool but at least they are polite!

They also get your hard earned cash, where as here the info is free :thumb2

Unfortunately, there are those that don't have any knowledge on how to care for their bike. I have built up my knowledge bit by bit (even did my tappets and Throttle balancing the other week, although the throttle balance still needs tweeking :o ). I think that most of the basics have now been covered a hundred times or more.
The key is to check the search first and then try posting.

I think you had a valid question, and I would agree with Tarka (if it runs on a bit past 3000 then no need to panic). As for magnetic sump plugs :nenau , I thought it already was but someone will come and correct me.

I think Bigchris, you should get a manual or stick to getting the bike main dealer serviced, until you know the ins and outs (mostly available through the search facility). Not worth getting angry about. Steptoe and Tarka have alot of knowledge and are a slightly different breed to most of us. There is justification in what was posted though, if you have an interest in how your bike works then RTM first.

Straight answer, me personally - engine oil every 3000miles, filter once a year, gearbox and final drive every 5000 ish.

10/40 in the colder weather, and 10/50 or 20/50 for hotter weather. Frequent changes of £15 mineral better than spunking £35 on some high falutin' synthetic race stuff and never changing it.

There - not hard was it you miserable buggers :D sure there was a time when all of us didn't know one end of a bike from the other so fess up the knowledge to those without the skills

Thanks,

Your attitude is much appreciated and should be applauded.

Oil change.

BMW reccomend that gear box and rear drive oils to be changed at least every two years.
