OK I got my new Adv (6 Months old) and I need to check the oil. No manual/hanbook the dealer is sending them onto me. How do I check the oil. If it needs topping up where is the filler and finally what oil do I need to use.

Hmmmmmmm....

Sight glass on left below cylinder. Run engine until fully warmed. Park on the level and put on main stand.

Check level after 10 mins. Oil should be between top & bottom of red ring. Ideally half way or higher.

Top up via filler cap on top of left cylinder. Tool for opening it should be in the tool roll under the seat.

Be prepared to do this after every fill up or other fill up of fuel!

But you didn't really need me to tell you that.

Thanks for the info. It was checked at the dealers when I picked it up. Not done many miles but there is a lebel that says check regularly :)

So what oil do I need and can I get it at Halfords or do I need some super duper BMW stuff.

Tarka, calling tarka......... :D

FWIW I use Castrol GP - a good quality 20/50 'Dino' oil.

For a fascinating 3 or 4 day read run a search on oil for other peoples views ;)

Used engine oil is crap in a boxer engine you need used chip pan lard, thinned out with a little battery acid. Works a treat.

The 12ooGSA manual says don't use a synthetics oil until you have done 1000kms :rob

Which bearing in mind that a boxer engine isn't worn in until at least 15k miles is utter bollix ;)

Just IMHO :thumb

Not in my experience :nenau
I bought a litre for "top ups" and have only added 250ml in 4000 miles, from memory that's a lot less than the 1150 used.

BMW now recommend a 20/50 mineral (car type oil) but usefully, none of their dealers stock it in 1 litre packs :eek Halfords do though :thumb

As Fanum (almost) says, stick with mineral oil until at least 12000 miles, then you can switch to semi synthetic or stick with mineral, enjoy the bike.

OK Dumb question :mmmm Can you use an oil with the friction modifiers used in car oils ? I believe the BMW clutch is dry (not sure though) so friction modifiers should be OK in the engine?

Hmmm Tarka could probably put this so much better than me :mmmm but, mineral car oil is fine (so I'm told) and the clutch is indeed dry-or should be ;)

cw supply some kind of castrol 20w50 mineral with new bikes. i can't comment on how good it is as i've not needed any yet :)

Well mine has done 17k miles and still takes a wee top up around every 300 to 400 miles.
