Some say check the oil when it's warm, others when it's cold. Due to the expansion of oil at different temperatures.

So if your so anal about it, what temperature should the oil be that you use top it up . :D

Using the INFO button on my GSA, with the engine running at a standstill, it tells you (eventually) Oil Level is...OK

Which is nice. However, there is a temperature reading on the dash. I'm pretty sure that is referring to the outside temperature, not the oil temperature. I can't find anything in the manual about it :nenau

Perhaps ...

... you could produce a 'Technical Bulletin' with a graph showing the effects of mixing differing proportions of cold oil with oil at 'normal' temperature. Of course you'll need to address what is 'normal' for varying ambient conditions and elevations; not to mention the effect of relative viscosities on fill-speed :augie

Half way down the sight glass when cold seems to correspond to almost at the top when full, so as long it's there or there about I don't care....

I'm sure Tarka posted a thread on just that issue, why not send him a quick PM?

If I used fully synthetic oil would the rate of expansion per degree kelvin be greater or lesser than the rate of expansion for the same volume of mineral oil which obviously would have to measured in farenheit.
:D

Saint Eptoe,

I have just come off the phone to the factory, I spoke to a very helpful lady about your problem. She said that all fluids need to be at body temperature , she suggested that you fill up ( Or get a freind to ) any body cavity with the best oil you can. When it has achieved desired temperature - you need to immediately evacuate said cavity into filler neck.

HTH :D:D:D

I have a kettle in the garage with my favourite blend of 20/50. Simply boil the oil and dispense I to a teapot. Place teacosy on pot and go for a ride. When you return from a 20 min ride, both oils are at the same temperature. Then you just need one china teacup full of oil per mill I'm the sight glass. I've been doing it this way for the last 57 years.

toooooo much info!

jay zussss! :eek

'gentlemen',
the way this thread is going.... for some reason puts me in mind of.....:augie
