Oil consumption using 20/50

BMW 1100GS handbook, oils of the category API SE, SF, SG, with CC or CD.
therefore no recommendations for semi- or fully-synthetic.
But as Timolgra says, 'some people think they know better'.
API SE, SF, SG doesn't mean it can't be synthetic, Bel-Ray do a synthetic 20w50 oil that is SG rated.

I have read all the comments and I am decided, Rock 20/50 Semi Synth in my 31,000 mile 1150 next service :D

Because it works better!?

how does it work better?

you put basic mineral oil in your engine, it never* wears out. what's better than that?

* er...realistically. your mileage, as they say, may vary.

I use Diesel Engine 15W40 'cos its what I have lots of in the garage.

it doenst matter what your opinion is, there is a contrary on the internet, and usually with evidence/ logic behind it. Ive stopped worrying about it this type of oil vs that type of oil. I change the oil probably every 4k mile which is probably an over kill - but I buy the oil in bulk and it isnt very dear, about £5/ 5lt.

The bike uses about 80-100ml every 1k miles- if that, i hardly ever have to top it up. Done about 9k miles since I got it. Bikes got 39K miles on it at the moment.

Our Indian takeaway sells big drums of used oil, just needs straining through a sock to get the bhaji bits out :thumb

Just done a change today and lobbed the 20 in - 6.99 per 5l from Focus, of all places.

Be interesting to see if I notice any difference.

If that's the same oil as I was looking at in Focus, it either doesn't meet the minimum spec or the spec wasn't mentioned on the bottle. (If.......may be summat compleeeetely different, though).

so why do BMW recommend a different oil grade then ?

BMW dealers in the UK always seem to recommend Castrol "motorcycle specific" oil. As Castrol don't make a 20w/50 bike oil* they can hardly recommend one. Do you think you will get objective advice from a company with such an obvious commercial tie to a particular brand?

As others have pointed out, read the bike service manual which gives generic specifications suitable for different weather conditions.

Finally, for those that want a 20W/50 motorcycle specific oil: look out for Morris V twin oil. Semi-synth & full synth. Should be available throughout the Midlands (they are based in Shrewsbury) and also at Hardly & Guzzi dealers.

*although I'm pretty sure their bike oils will meet the "special oils" useable temp. range given at the bottom of the BMW service booklet.

i've always used 20/50 - no worries- GTX2

Pajero is on 25/60 - dont think you can get it in UK - $17 - 5 litres - shell helix

It's called "Route 1". And you are probably right. I figured that as I am basically putting it into a 1930s tractor engine, it will be fine. At that price, I can change it twice as often too, and still be quids in.

It's brown and oily, like oil. How bad can it be? In fact, look at my piccie to the left - I'm enjoying a nice glass of it now.
