oil consumption

Just that some riders say.that they have to add oil every frequently , there is even a sticker on the clocks as if bmw think they use oil

Running in too gently has a lot do with it I think. The 2008 I had a few years ago used a fair bit when I got it at 12k. After a decent bit of hard usage it settled down, the gearbox improved and it also became smoother. In fact by the time I sold it at 60k it wasn't using any oil at all. My current 2012 doesn't use any either.

I also have a 2011 TC and mine never uses a drop from one year to the next. Oil and filter every year and forget about it

Maybe it depends on what oil you use - perhaps you should ask for advice on which oil to use?

Mine gets a regular work out. Now has 65K on the clock & never uses oil. The only time it appeared to burn oil was when I'd over filled it. The excess will get burnt away then the level never changes.

61 plate TC here, also never uses a drop of oil, used most days, short and long trips and commuting.

A lot of people think they use oil because they get all out of sorts if it drops a few mm in thw window. If you overfill it just throws it out the back.

That's the one. If the sight glass has oil in the window ride the bike and forget about it.

Mine 2012 TC does use oil.
Started off at about 1/3 litre / 1000 miles but it's improving all the time (I bought it with 3k on it and the previous owner was an older gentleman who I think, babied it)

Mine uses oil2013 around 1/3 ltr per 6000 miles as I have to top up just before serving

Some do, some don't. Whichever type you own act acordingly and don't worry about it.

I seem to recall reading somewhere upto 1 ltr per xxx miles was deemed normal...


I think the xxx figure was bloody low, which made me think crikey!!!!

I bought my 2006 GSA in 2011 it had done 19,000 miles at the time the dealer/salesman told me to check the oil on any long trips, alarm bells were ringing when he said this and I thought id bought a ragged bike with a knackered engine. It turned out it was just good advice.

It did use oil around 1/2 litre per 1000 miles although it never smoked. when it got to 30,000 miles and less use of oil I changed the oil to synthetic and I've never had to top it up since.
52,000 miles now and engine great.

My brothers Mk2 adventure had 12K on the clock when he bought it. It used oil though nothing serious.
It felt like the brakes were on compared to mine which (then) had 40K on the clock.

He's ragged his bike and used it for 200 mile motorway journeys. Now with over 20K showing it's more free revving and consumes hardly any oil.

Don't treat these engines too carefully when new. As the manual says, start it and ride away. Once the oil temperature starts to show you can work it "properly".
