Having a better look over my new (to me) R1200GS Rallye, I wasn't expecting to find any horrors on a bike that hasn't covered 2,500 miles yet......until I spotted the oil leak!

Nothing serious, it's leaking from the oil cooler return pipe banjo, but what I don't understand is.....there appears to be just a single copper washer on the outer side of the fitting under the banjo bolt.....the engine side seems to be up tight against the block with no sign of a copper washer.

The previous owner did the last oil change himself, but I don't see why that should involve the oil cooler pipe anyway.

Surely there should be two copper washers....one either side of the fitting.....or am I missing something?

I have the same bike , just looked at mine and it has a copper washer on both sides

Thanks for that.......I'll order a few right now......I thought it had to be the case, but wasn't certain so much appreciated.:thumb2

My brother's 08 Adv had a strange oil leak. At first we thought it was the spare oil bottle fitted by previous owner. Took that off but all was ok and leak persisted. Changed the banjo washers which looked fine and sure enough, the leak persisted.
It turned out to be the crank position sensor on top of the timing gear cover. When we took off the alternator belt cover the alloy was badly corroded and actually disrupted the O ring seal. Any worse would have needed a new cover.
A long story to say the leak might not be what you expect.

Fingers crossed it's no more than a missing copper washer.....it does make me wonder how it got to be that way in the first place though.

Mick.

I was shocked at Bro's front cover corrosion. It was failing around the screws but totally hidden under the belt guard (where it can't be cleaned) was a horrible mess.
