oil drinking

Hi folks

that topic of oil consumption again

ive got a yr 2000 1150gs with 66,500 miles on the clock. she had a 60k service at steptoe's in mid july and she's now due another service.

she has been drinking a fair bit of oil of late, a 1 litre bottle of 20w-50 oil disappears on a fortnightly basis. im getting concerned now as i smell oil quite frequently from the exhaust now and she has smokey start-ups at times.

has anyone else got a bike of similiar mileage and what is their oil consumption? i'm doing around 400 miles a week at present.

i know gs's drink oil but im starting to wonder if this takes the biscuit!

Only about 100-200 ml per 1000 miles. I think I'm quite lucky.

2001 1150GS with 61k on it, so not too different from yours.

03 with 38000 miles uses about 100ml per 6000 miles at 10 k when i got her she used more than she did now. seems to be getting better with age

Obvoiusly could be wear but also could be glazed bores at the opposite end fo the spectrum. If you are an agressive red line hitter then it's unlikely to be the latter. If you drive like a granny then give the previous approach a go

A tip is not to keep the oil topped up to the top of the window as I have always seemed to use that bit quicker and then not really used much after that. Just keep it at the middle spot if you usually top it right up.

My experience of running like a stoker was after a dealer overfilled the engine by about half a litre many years ago

Drain the airbox and see how much is in there, and as above don't fill it up to the top of the glass.
