About 2000 miles ago a friend (he changed the filter) of mine helped me change the oil and oil filter in my 1150gs. I decided to change the oil and filter myself, and everything was going well until I tried to get the oil filter off with that big nut thing. To cut a long story short, have been unable to get the filter out and I have managed to pull all of the guts out of the thing and can now see straight up into the oil filter and were it connects to the engine. This whole process has taken about 3 hours so far.

I tried putting some WD40 on it and left it overnight, but still no luck, and since then have put a light bulb on the engine and left it there and hope that it might heat the area up a bit, but I think I could be playing with myself. If anyone has any idea's please let me know, as I'm all out of them and are currently playing on the road. :(

filter

How tight was it done up originally?sounds like it was over tightened, and did you oil the seal before instalation?if not this could be the problem, they more or less become glued to the contact area if not.So what you are saying all thats left is the top part of the filter, the steel threaded part that screws onto the engine it's normally got six holes in it!!the only way I think your going to get it off is to make some sort of tool with six bolts or less that locate in the holes braced together and then a bigger bolt welded on to get a socket on.How deperate are you for the bike?I will make something over the weekend to get it off for you if you can wait, because it sounds like it might be worth having one.Just don't go trying to get it off with a big hammer and screwdriver, you f*ck the thread up on this your knacked as it's machined into the engine casing.Thats my idea anyone else got any suggestions?.Andy

Just one more thing, when you look up into the filter recess can you see the six holed steel plate the top part of the filter or is it just a plate with no holes. Can you take a picture for us that would help?.Andy

Hi Andy,

I have spoken to bm and they have the same idea as you, and i thinks it a bloodly good one too; and yes I can see those holes. I have put some long nose pliers in two of the holes and tried to turn it but not much luck, as you really need a tool. I'm trying to talk to South London BM to see if they might have a tool as I'm currently in Bromley in Kent. I'll keep you posted, as I might have to take you up on your very kind offer. Should we have to go down that road, I'm sure that I could sort out a few tinnies for your service.

Many thanks Skip. :beerjug:

I have already started to make it,but I have go to work now so I will finish it 2morrow half done so won't take long,if you can see the holes then we should be ok.If the bike shop can help you before I can then go for that,if not sit tight.Andy

Oil and oil filter changed 2000 miles age, or about 3 months ago
Last time the oil and filter was changed it was done by myself and a friend.
It is not a BM filter.

Many thanks Andy,

As I took your idea and built a tool that would fit in those six holes of the oil filter. After about an hour making one from an old socket, I tried it, and within 5 mins I had it off and in about 1 hour I will be riding, thanks to your idea.
