OIL FILTER STUCK ON TIGHT

could av been worse, uggs just snapped all 4 off , changin his oil,
my, how i laughed

I snapped one of mine last oil change (luckily just seperated the rubber from the sumpguard side of the bolt). Managed to mole grip the remains out and replaced it with a temporary bolt made from some M6 SS studding, a couple of penny washers and the original rubber bit drilled through. I removed all the others too and coppaslipped them

Ordered four new rubber mount jobbies ready for next oil change.

How did you fix it the engine (rubber part) did you aradit/superglue it ?

Just drilled a 6mm hole through it and put a washer each side. The piece of studding goes straight through so there's effectively no rubber mounting for that one, but at least it spaces it right to match the others.

As I said, just a temporary fix to allow me to get the bike back on the road while waiting for the new rubber mounts. However, even though I've got the new ones now, I won't be changing it till I do the next oil change.

All of my rubber mounts have snapped, thankfully remaining on the engine, my sumpguard is held on by the engine bars now, makes it easy come service time.

Ad a good laugh at this thread . . . . No special tool so put a screw driver through it. . . .half an hour later, oil everywhere, getting really p"""""", then realised I was turning it the wrong way!. 5min later, job done:thumb2

I was turning mine the correct way and it still would not come off, even though 2 other people had a go and could not shift it

.Ad a good laugh at this thread . No special tool so put a screw driver through it. . . .

It's very easy for the screwdriver to also go through the engine case in the oil filter recess . Then you wouldn't be laughing.
And yes it has happened, but i'm afraid i'm under oath not to reveal any names :comfort

ahem.... :augie

So how did you tighten the new one up - put a screwdriver through that one too? :augie

when changing the oil and oil filter are you supposed to warm the engine (ie turn it on, go for a short spin) first and does this make it easier for the filter to come off...:nenau

Getting the engine to operating temp ensures the oil is at its thinnest so as much of it as possible drains out. This could I guess soften the rubber gasket on the filter, although the inverse could also be true and the extra heat could cause the seal to swell.

I personally use a textile strap wrench on all cassette oil filters now (to undo) and only use the metal spanner type to torque them up. Ive dented a few cans with the strap but never failed to get one off.

Sorry I did not put it on I would presume it was a BMW seeing that it had a full service history with them, but I can't say for certain not much left of it to tell either :D

oil filter woes

hi
had the same problem 4 years back on a buell , came out the factory with a filter put on dry , in the end , screw driver last resort, used a chain type first and crushed the oil filter when it would not come off ,so had to use a strap type and the screw driver pushed though the filter and still had trouble , paranoid then every time i had to take a filter off for 2 years , touch wood only the dry one i had trouble with .
