Can anyone tell me how 'universal' the oil filter tool is, which I need for my 2000 GS? My wife's got an ER5 and asked me to buy a 'universal' oil filter wrench for hers - anything 'round that I can use for both bikes, or do I have to fork out for two tools:confused: .

thanks

Martin

Not sure about the ER5, but Ive just bought one for the 1150 from Halfords (76mm diam I think it was) - £4.99

What type of tool is it? - I only ask because I ended up buying a BMW tool because I couldn't find anything else which would fit into the recess...

Looks like this.
Comes in various diameters depending on the size of filter fitted to your bike.
£7 from Motobins for 1150 GS size.

Yep, that's identical to the BMW one I've got, Kenny, but I'd not seen anything like it in Halfords...

Mike:confused:

76mm, 14 flats. Any decent automotive parts supplier should have one, as it's the same for some Mercs and BMW cars. I think I paid £2.50 for mine

The one from Halfords looks the same as Kennies, but it made out of pressed steel rather than cast.

Got mine from my local motor factors abot £3, took the filter in and they matched it, 1200 owners should be able to do the same trick theres is a Fiat or Citroen one. If your posh your Snap On tools man will do you one at a more extravagant price

If you're feeling flash, Halfords do a "Professional" tool that has three moving prongs, that will grip pretty much any size of oil filter.

It needs a bit of work with an angle grinder to use it on a 1200 though, to make the prongs fit into the gap between filter and sump. Might be the same story for the older bikes, I'm not sure. But even when "modified" in this way it will work fine on other (jap) bikes.

BMW tool reference number

Do you have the bmw reference number for the oil tool? I live in Florence and my BMW delear doesn't want to sell it to me!!!!

1150 oil filter tool is identical to the original K-series, as are the filters I believe. Fuel filters may also be interchangeable between the K's & the 11XX oilheads if you're ever stuck.

If I remember, I'll post the part number from my tool later.
