Just read a thread on the Yank site saying that the 1200GS needs a special tool for oil filter removal. Havent yet got to needing an oil change, but is this correct? Can you not use an ordinary strap wrench? It looks like an ordinary screw on filter.

Presumably you need to take the bash plate off first

The problem is, that the filter is mounted in a recess in the engine. There's only about a 5mm gap around about 2/3 of the filter's circumference.

You might be able to get a strap wrench in there, in fact I think it's likely, from memory. I use a Halfords oil filter tool that I modified with an angle grinder to make the "prongs" thin enough to fit into the gap.

I was lazy and bought the special tool. Bit of a rip off at £32 however.

There's a guy in the Vendors forum on the advrider.com website who sells his own version, CNC machined oil filter wrench for US$35. I got one and it's a fine piece of machining..

You need one if you want to fit the filter with the correct torque setting. The BMW OEM filter wrench is US$75.. a complete rip off!

Yes, I saw that thread and its why I raised the query. Have never previously needed to use a torque wrench with a can type filter. Is there something special about the BM one?

You've obviously earn more than i do -- Snap on do one- size is 74/12 - £11 quid.
Here's a quik tip for oil & filter changes, punch a small hole in the bottom of the filter while you 're draining the oil from the engine. It makes life a lot easier when you come to spin off the filter as there is a lot more oil than you think that drips everywhere when you come to remove it

...not sure about the earning bit, but I was pushed for time to drop the oil, so it had to be the quickest solution.

Another top tip is not to use a Halfords oil draining can, it cannot take the speed at which the oil comes out of the GS, ended up with at least 2ltrs on my garage floor, which I wasn't best pleased about!!!
