I've lost my Haynes book, please can someone advise which gearbox and final drive oil I need and how much for my 98 1100.
Thanks in advance

Thanks in advance

Any GL5 gearbox oil. I use halfords 80w90. The important thing is whatever you use has to be GL5 grade. Annoyingly to do a gearbox and FD oil change takes just over 1 litre ( so you have to buy two bottles).
Can you use the same oil again in a few years time?

If by "the same oil" you mean the unused oil out of your second bottle, then yes in my opinion of course you can. Personally I wouldn't use oil older than a year or so but I've no idea how long it actually takes to 'go off' in the bottle.
As I change all my 1100's fluids every 3000 miles it's never an issue for me...

How can oil go off ? It's millions of years old before they bottle it anyway.![]()

I use a 80w/90 GL5 for the gearbox and a straight 90w Hypoid for the F/D
A few years!?!
Change your FD oil every time you change engine oil, it costs feck all

Please explain the advantages of that for us oil numpties![]()

Yeah but the next 10 gearbox oil changes you only have to buy one bottle.![]()

Dunno why the make and sell Hypoid gear oil then
.

Marketing.
The 80w90 is labelled as 'differential oil' anyway - go figure.
As long as its GL5 it doesn't matter.
I once filled my gearbox with expensive 'extreme use' Castrol Syntrax 75w140 to see if reduced the clunking and general Massey Ferguson qualities of the box (it was like golden syrup).
It made sod all difference so I've gone back to 80w90![]()

Its not marketing, there are differences between gear oil and hypoid gear oil, a bit of home learning with Google as your friend might help
And if your still a non believer just keep on filling your F/D with gearbox oil
,
I know there are differences but the 80w90 I put in my FD (and gearbox) is labelled as 'differential oil'. Last time I looked, differentials contain hypoid gear sets.
