I did read the manual -

Halfords only had 'Classic Motor Oil' - 20w50 (as the manual said)

API SE CC

Is this the right oil to top up my 04 1150 ADV?

Thanks very much.....I'll even buy you a beer in Wales!

ONE WORD ANSWER THOR >>>>

YES:thumb2:thumb2:thumb2:thumb2

Thanks, I only chose that one because that was the only 20/50 oil they had.
I was hoping to get out on the bike tommorrow...

thanks again, (though I'm still none the wiser, some say yes and others say nay)

this is my choice, which was made via shell rep who comes in our shop and proved that other oils r not up to the job,i use shell vsx in my 999s ducatis and gsa1150 top oil for my bikes
Halfords 'Classic Motor Oil' - 20w50 is :blast cheap crap
hold on before you shoot me let me explain:mcgun
halfords and other small brand buy oil very cheap then sell it to you for 200% mark up
shell and motul have very little mark up,because there oil is far better and is refined and tested and developed for bike only
now halfords oil 20 /50 for bikes and cars which is wrong :blast
we dont sell castrol because asda sell it ?what do there no :spitfire
buy oil from bike shops:thumb2 not wallmart
dont forget different places have different oil range
ie cold place is 20 50 and warm place 10 40
anywho is my choice and you have to make your please dont buy for carshops :handbag

e cold place is 20 50 and warm place 10 40

I think you meant this the other way round:augie

Looking at the wording & the time of the post, were you, err, well intentioned, but  or:beer:

Or was it written with a Warrington accent:D

:)As Greg has said before it's the API rating that matters , and if Halfords oils are sourced to the same standard as their 'Own Brand' Halfords tools I wouldn't have a problem using it.
I would also venture that taking advice from the Shell rep whilst he may be extremely knowledgeable and well intentioned he is not likely to be independent.:thumb2

Been there and read the threads (hours worth) In a nutshell it led me to this conclusion :

1150 10/40 semi synthetic... 2500 miles round europe, didnt drink any :thumb

1200 after first service 20/50 mineral 1200's run hotter than 1150's

I rest my case :D

Halfords oils were supplied by Wakefield oils in the past {Castrol}
Castrol XL 20/50 is still the best 20/50 around on spec and tests followed extremely closely by Silkolene...
Halfords Classic is I believe the same as Castrol Classic, a slightly less detergent ridden variation [if you service every 5K miles it makes no difference]
Most modern oils have a 10k or even 20k life span  in motor cars.
I don't know one motorcyclist/ biker who would run oil that long in our old tractors:rob...
In modern oils you pay for the additives, and save over service downtime and labour charges [UNLESS YOU GO TO A BMW GARAGE :spitfire £300 no change sir :spitfire }

The one seriously big cockup in the past was Ford Motor company marketing Duckhams as FoMoCo oil for CVH engined Escorts, and it killed 1000's and 1000's with black [sludge] death

i us chip oil sunflower type :blast
oil is down to u and yep got it wrong way round but it was 2.am
silkacrap is just that i would not put it in a scooter never mind a bike
shell, rock and motul, motrex r ones i would use, but come on not halfords there sell gear nobs for cars :handbag

A few years ago whilst in Palm Springs (USA) I loadied up my panniers with as many gallon cans of mobil I as I could. At £12.00 a can seemed like a good buy! (£36.00 at home!) I'sure you have good commercial reasons for reccomending buying oil from bike shops! usually twice the price of other motor shops!. Just look at the oil spec and go for the best name / price. As for the shell rep, he's hardly likely to tell you anything else is he?.

I have now remembered WHY I said I would not reply to any more oil thread Questions::blast:blast:blast

The Fact I did a lot of research and testing of all oils for my thesis, [long long time ago] seems to carry no weight at all...:augie
so therefore anyone requiring oil recommendations from me can kindly kiss my arse.....:thedummy

Unless of course you are an Airhead owner and therefore one of the Elite:rob:rob
but only via pm:)

Well thanks everyone, sorry I seemed to have opened a can of worms. Went back to Halfords and changed for Castrol Magnatec SL/CF, 40/15. The book said this is ok, but will change it for the proper stuff when I get the chance.

Thanks again
