Oil Leak From Rear Of Engine

Hello,

I appear to have developed a small leak from the rear of the engine. After a wipe down and monitor, I think it is coming from between the engine and the gearbox. It is pooling in the rear of the bad plate and is prominent when wiping on the rear top of the dumps.

I have a few photos of the area it is leaking from. If you wouldn’t mind having a look and correcting me or agreeing it would be appreciated.

I suspect it is either the main seal or counter balance seal.

Bike is 2013 R100GSA 90th Anniversary.

The leak appears to be coming from above where the two large Torx heads are.

If it smells of gearbox oil then it’s a gearbox seal, but most likely to be crankshaft or balancer. The clutch may also be contaminated, if you are lucky BMW might contribute the cost of parts.......

Most of the time this is balancing shaft seal but if you going that far it is recommended to replace all the seals and friction plate as well parts will cost around £200

Don’t replace the seals if they aren’t leaking. I’ve seen and heard of many non leaking seals that have leaked after being replaced And measure the friction plate thickness before needlessly replacing it, 4.40 mm is fecked, 6.60/80mm is new.

Hi Steptoe friend of mine from Scotland head his bike done in BMW two weeks ago they only replaced friction plate ... week later he was back in replacing leaking seal personally I would be gated if I have to split the bike again after the week of riding but I guess it's personal choice.

I know... with your experience probably disassembling them with your eyes closed.

So turns out it is the main camshaft seal. Parts are ordered and will be collecting from Cooper Motorrad at Boldon in the morning.

The subframes to gearbox mounting bolt next to the centre stand had me stumped for a while I must admit.

Steptoe can you spare some insight on how to beat remove the flywheel bolts to get to the oil seal. I have the pressure and friction plate removed. Fortunately it looks like I have caught the leak early as there is no contamination on any part of the clutch.

Also is there an easier option to reconnect the drive shaft onto the gearbox splines? I’m

Ahh, i see you worked out how to remove the flywheel bolts....

Did you work out the easy option for reconnecting the driveshaft

Not yet.

Still struggling to get the two half reconnected.

I would leave the drive shaf out and install it after ... then nothing to worry about

I have questions for you as a professional mechanic do you change all the bolts for new as recommended by manual?
Flywheel bolts, pressure plate, balancing shaft and frame fittings ? Or do you reuse some of these?

Well that was a task I don’t want to do again anytime soon.

16 hours in total for my first time.

Finished at 2230 tonight.

Good work! And you found a use for those weight plates I do a bit but I don't think I would have taken this on. Sorts out the men from the boys (actually not really PC that is it 'cos I don't know, you could be a woman.... that dryer in the corner )

A Clutch kit comes with new bolts. Yes, new Flywheel bolts.

All other bolts get re-used.
