Bike doesnt get used much and has spent the last few years on the sidestand. left hand side of sump is covered in oil.

any idea what causes this? There is no oil on the floor

Video

the oil filter looks like its the original !

these are more like a car with a "dry" single plate car clutch and a separate gearbox

according to what I read both the engine rear main seal likes to leak (which would be around that area), and a load of shafts on the gearbox can too

when its all apart four new seals and a new clutch - and the rear main MUST be fitted dry and when the sleeve's withdrawn, you leave for 24hrs to find its shape on the crank

best video I ever saw.... likely ride to see this guy and get the job done for 1/8 of the UK price

oil and filter was changed last year

The oil could be coming down from "up top". It will always find it's way down eventually and to the left when on sidestand. You need to carefully follow the trail to the source.

I had a leak from from a bolt on top of engine similar to this thread and it was pooling up top before finding it's way down.

Yet again Botus the "AI bot" strikes!! Since when have BMW fitted Hi Flo You Dickhead!!

@r1200rt Number one, you used a P*O*S Hi Flo Mahle OC

I suspect that the issue is at the top seal is not seated correctly "or" filter not tightened enough "or" what sometimes happens is that the old filter sealing ring gets stuck on to the engine casing and then you screw another one on on top of it and then can pish oil immediately or like yours, leak down slowly more staining than pishing

I do not think that it is the lower part of the cylinder where the M6 allens / torx hold it But I have seen it

Looking at the oil trail, i's say your probably spot on, the oil is running backwards along the fins, then when it gets to the back its dripping down,

the other one would be a cross threaded oil filter?

filter is not cross threaded and the oil seal was changed with the filter

A mates Hex GSA leaked oil only when leant over on the side stand. Leak traced to the oil temp sensor on top of the engine block surface on the RH side which was pooling oil under the alternator then would run down the LH side of the engine when leant over on the side stand.

Turned out to be a corroded alloy crush washer under the oil temp sensor, fiddly to get to as a roadside repair but sorted out with basic tools during a tour of the Scottish highlands.

Yes I had this exact thing but couldn't remember the name of the "oil temp sensor". The thing is it's not a bolt that was ever touched, as you say, corrosion.

the reference was to the state / condition of the filter - as you spotted - even a halfwit can read the Brand on there

Well the half wit must not have bothered to "look" properly before typing it's usual crap

or "it" would not have made the statement Talking Bullshit about Clutch and Crank Seal when it is 8 inches further to the rear

So who is the AI Bot and who is the person now ?

And....relax.
I`m too dim to understand the technicalities involved which have led to a falling out, but its not really helping the OP is it?

Exactly. Pretty pointless and making both look like a couple of childish idiots

If the oil is tracking down from above another thing it could be is a leak from the left hand cam chain tensioner on top of the cylinder casting. Not as easy to spot on the
RT due to all the Tupperware in the way.

@Bem

I don;t know if it is a person or an AI Bot, (I lean towards the Bot!!!) who on numerous occasions has given totally incorrect and misleading information in fact usually obscuring the original question with Unconnected Bull!

i.e. in this instance ...... Spouting off total bollocks about it being a Crank output seal (or possibly balancer shaft ) which is way behind this location "and" also the airflow carries the oil mess backwards towards the rear wheel not forward to the oil filter location!

I will watch for these instances and If "it" does provide incorrect or worse Dangerous info, I will jump in So that some poor bugger does not end up

1) paying a lot more than they should for a repair, when it is really a simple fix

2) Much more important!! Get injured somehow as a result of a half assed response

I apologise if you are annoyed by this but it ius fairly necessary I mean when @Santa-2512 has him blocked for frying his brain with bullshit ... It says something HE normally carries everything in his stride
