hi could anybodey tell me if its a common fault for oil leaking out of the oil observation glass
Hi mate, definately NO!!!!
It's a worry though, this only normally happens if the engine has been overheated. If you leave these things running for too long without riding them they have very little cooling capability, the engine gets very hot, the sight glass drops out as the casing expands, this equals disaster!

Most definitely not.
There have been cases (rare) of the sight glass blowing out or coming out. Not good.
Get it fixed ASAP.
Unless of course you have just filled it and simply spilt some oil?

had for one week 07 with 12ooo miles its only seeping got bmw to pick it up tonight under warenty bikes mint just abit peved off
Ask dlr to check over completely, this is a very worrying fault matey, as far as i am aware, these things are fitted in at build, and CANNOT be replaced. If as Wapping suggests, it is the sight glass & not from somewhere else of course?
As i said before, they only EVER leak/come out if the engine has been seriously overheated.
I'm not trying to scare-monger, just look after your 'hard earned'.

Yeah mine did, the seal went and was replaced on the next service, its only a 10 mins or so job for a mechanic to do.

Lots of people will tell you that 1200GS's are only designed to fit on pick-up trucks. It's crap, don't believe them.
Just say thanks that you discovered it and BuMW will now sort it out.
You would have been a lot more peeved (and maybe in a considerable amount of pain) had the three odd litres of hot oil washed its way onto your back tyre, or poured out over your slippers.
