Oil Leak

'04 bike with 15k. I have noticed a faint appearance of an oil leak to the rear of the gear box. On a recent service the local dealer confirmed it was the seal on the gear box output shaft. Just wondered if anyone else had experienced this and if I should I take out a second mortgage for a repair?

I bought my 55 plate GS nearly a month ago. Used it for one day and exactly the same happened. Mine was more than a faint leak.
The service dept told me exactly what it was without seeing it.
Must be a common fault. Mines done 18000m.
Sorry can't help on cost, had it done under warranty.

It's a very common fault. Yours must be one of the few '04 bikes which hasn't had it replaced under warranty. My old '04 bike was actually split in half twice, once for the rear crankshaft oil-seal and once for a gearbox oil-seal.

You're correct in thinking that it's not going to be cheap, since it involves splitting the bike in half to replace anything to do with the clutch or gearbox.

Its the output shaft not the input shaft no need to split the bike, i used a seal reconditioner from forte on my old 1100 (we sell the stuff) & tried it with no high hopes & it worked that was a year ago

I'd ask the dealer to approach BMW to see if they will contribute towards the costs - even though it is out of warranty.

As the mileage is so low they may look favourably on this. Plus there's the fact that it is a relatively common and well documented fault.

if one seal is leaking chances are they are all leaking. if its bad and on yer clutch plate your gonna be looking somewhere around 7-800

speak to customer services nicely. even though bike is 4 yrs old they may do parts or labour.
remember dont get snippy wi them and you stand a very good chance.
