Has anyone had the problem of a engine sight glass leaking oil? Any information on repair would be appreciated. Cheers Karl

its fairly common.

usually because people start their bikes up and leave them running to ''warm up''

ususlly that just blows the site glass straight out and oil pumps out.

straightforward job, its a new rubber gasket you need,

so, dont have bike running, start it and go, even in winter.

All you need to know is here:

On a 1200 in addition to being a pushfit, the sight glass is held in with a circlip. This isn't shown in the howto above but everything else is the same (just remove the circlip first and fit the new one which comes with the sight glass when you've finished). Motorworks (and of course dealers) sell the new sight glasses.

I've just done mine (on my 1100) - 5 minute job.

Really, how so

Elevensies 'usually' probably overstates it but I've read of several cases both on here and ADV where bikes left to 'warm up' (especially 11xx's on fast idle) have overheated and either popped out or melted (or both) the plastic sight glass. Obviously the circlip on 1200's will stop them popping out but they'll still melt.

Blimey.........must be some serious overheating to melt the plastic window :eek

I know - sounds unlikely but it does happen (although it seems to need a lot of unattended idling):
