Oil leak

Would appreciate someone letting me know what this bottle/reservoir is and what it's for. The cap is split from being over-tightened and it's leaking. It's on the right hand side underneath the petrol tank on a 2009 R1200 GSA.
The usually helpful Mr Haynes hasn't provided any answers so would be very grateful if somebody could please shed some light on this.

This is just a spare bottle to contain some oil - just in case. It's not part of the bike.

Just take it off the bike and clean the area up. I'd suggest getting a new cap or bottle as it's handy to have some oil on the bike (engine oil rather than gear oil).

Hahaha really? . I swapped the wheels over today and only noticed this leak last thing and didn't have enough time to investigate properly.

I didn't even know the 'emergency' oil bottle was there. To be honest I don't see it necessary to always carry spare oil. I make sure the bike is topped up before any long trip and if I had such a catastrophic loss of oil where I would need to use the emergency bottle the bike's probably not rideable anyway and recovery by AA would be on the cards.

There was a recent post where someone had used that space for the compressor on a split sound bomb horn upgrade. Maybe a tool tube would fit in there. Shame to waste the space if you're removing the oil bottle though, like you, I don't see the point of carrying spare oil all the time.

I had a split Denali Soundbomb on my GS and was looking to upgrade the horn on the GSA but couldn't see anywhere to mount the thing as this bike has ESA and that gets in the way. Knowing the recess is there opens up more options. Good shout on the tool tube. Hadn't thought of that.

Clearly you haven't owned an oil cooled GS for very long. Get a fresh bottle and fill it up, your bike will thank you when you are half way up a mountain and it wants more oil

Had my previous oil cooled GS for five years but it didn't have an emergency oil bottle. I'm pretty sure this spare bottle is only available on the GSA but as I've only had my current bike for four months I can't confirm that plus I still have a lot to learn about it. Fair point re carrying a spare bottle if going up mountains and may just do that on my next trip off the beaten track. Cheers

The recess where your split oil bottle is is really for a carbon canister / emissions control filter as fitted to some models (USA spec I think). It’s just a handy place to shove something and an oil bottle fits rather neatly.

My 06 gsa doesn't have a space there to fit said bottle, I feel robbed, not that I need somewhere to put a bottle of course.

This is the normal one I use - I have got two - the first one the rubber mount perished but they replaced with a metal one in the later version. I did find I had to put a couple of metal and rubber tap washers under the bracket to give it enough space not to squash the bottle, but I have ridden 40,000 with this bottle attached with no problems, with the lid or seal. And if you are going on a tour more than 1,000 miles I would recommend it. Having said that, my bike seems to have stopped using any oil now it has reached 60,000 miles, maybe it is run in now

My brother's bike had exactly the same issue but removing the oil bottle made no difference. His leak turned out to be corrosion around the crank position sensor which sits on the top of the engine front cover.
