Oil Leak!

I've got an oil leak on my 04 Adventure (9500m). I get drips onto the inside of the sump bash plate on the right hand side (looking from the back of the bike). I've whipped the bash plate off and given the plate and sump a good clean but couldnt see anything obvious.

The drips appear as though they are coming from the sump plug (I gave it a little tighten tweak but this didnt stop it) but this could just be because it pretty much the lowest part. The only seal as such I can see is the one which runs front to back down the middle of the sump.

The oil filter on the left is dry as is the front of the engine and side where the gearbox joins the engine. Oh also, no running problems at all, runs great.

Any ideas? common probs?

Question.... Not that I have, but what happens if you overfill with oil? Does it come out, and if so where?

Gonna phone the dealer tomorrow, but would like to be prepared.

re oil leak

i had the same problem found it to be the oil pressure connection under the tank right hand side it has an oil seal in it i simply undone the unit checked seal ok put back together that was 1500 miles ago no leaks hope this helps

Thx for the reply. Question.... If its leaking from the oil pressure connection under the petrol, this put the leak at the top of the engine block, but I cant see any oil going down the side of the engine past the pots????

Anyone else seen this?

wery difficult trying to spot an oil leak over the net.


If you can't find it, and you've got the bike in front of you, how are we supposed to know where it's coming from

I guess I was after "Its the whojimiwhatsit, always leaks there...". Guess they spring a leak wherever. The filter is dry as a bone, so I guess it cant be that, which leaves the sump plug and the seal which runs front to back down the middle of the engine short block.

I've tweaked up the sump plug, is it likely to be that?

You're supposed to change the sump plug washer every time you remove the sump plug for an oil change because the aluminium compresses and hardens. If it wasn't replaced last time the oil was changed then it could be the source of the leak.

I'd suggest cleaning the engine thoroughly with Gunk or Autoglym Motorcycle Degreaser and then riding it for a bit without the sump guard on. With a clean, uncovered engine you should be able to trace the source of the leak more easily.

Er... no. On the one hand this is a warranty job surely, on the other hand oil and filters are consumables. I guess at the very least I'd want it knocking off my 12k service bill as it doesn't need an oil change till then.

Taken a step further, if this was a blown engine would you be expecting to pay for all the consumables on a warranty job?

This is the first bike I've had with a warranty that actually means something. Had a prilla before this and th warranty wasn't worth the paper it was written on.

From bitter experience, yes. I would expect to pay for the oil in a similar situation, but then I wouldn't take it to a dealer to change the sump plug washer anyway, warranty or no warranty. Too much hassle for a 10 minute job, 5p washer and £20 of oil.
