got an oil leek which appears to be coming from the top r/h side of the engine i suspect from the oil cooler outlet or oil temp sender ,,i have replaced the crush washer from the temp sender and checked the o ring on the cooler outlet which seems ok (never had one to replace it with) question is this a common fault ,has anyone else experienced a problem from this area and which one did it come from ...cheers gord

Didn't know you can get oil from leeks, let alone have one that leaks!?

learn something new every day!

i have just noticed the same fault on my 1150gs. she's been weeping oil from the oil temp sensor gauge of late and I have a new washer to fit to cure this hopefully. I'm also hoping I don't have to take the tank off to rectify this problem.

You'll do the job a lot quicker if you take the tank off. If you've got QD connectors, that is. One bolt, one plug, two QD connectors and 2 vent hoses. Nearly as quick to do it as to type it :)

Incidentally, if you haven't got QD connectors (1100s and early 1150s didn't have them as standard, later 1150s did) they're well worth fitting.

Interesting.
I'm just about to replace my 1100's plastic tank for a new steel one (and in the process re-pipe all the internal and external hoses / breathers). I guess it may be worth fitting QD's too? Should I just get standard ones (which I believe are plastic?) or are there better alternatives? Or should I not bother :D

Sorry about the hijack.

The BMW part for the 1150 have been changed, the male part is now metal and the female part is still plastic.

I never saw the point of fitting them.. the tank only comes off every two years. (if that)

Of course if your gonna be taking it off every 5 minutes its probably a wise move.

The last time it came off was to change the fuel filter.. a few years ago. I ran it down to a steady amber light. then syphoned the last bit of fuel out.. basically to check it for any water. my usual habit.

so apart from that.. changing the filter. I see no earthly reason for touching the tank. and so no reason for fitting them.

The OE ones are pretty expensive. Motorworks do similar ones for about half the price which I've just fitted to my 850 and they seem good.

I know motorbiker says you don't need them but I guess it depends on how often you expect to take your tank off.

no.. I'm not saying 'you' don't need them.. I'm saying I don't need them.. the only time the tank comes off completely is to change the fuel filter.. and my habit is to empty the last dregs from the tank at that time anyway. there's another reason for this apart from water. I've had a GS tank shed its inner liner.. so I like to physically examine the inside of the tank while its off.

just to be sure.

they don't cost all that much.. so why not. have to admit everytime i place an order from motorworks Ive thought about em.. then thought 'why bother?'

I replaced the temp sensor under there recently, it is one possible source of a leak, I suggest that when you get the tank off you may be able to see whats going on.:nenau

Mine is a 99 model 1150, they do not come earlier here, you still got 1100,s in 99 so I did this mod with brass fittings, works a treat, right seals as well.. they were by RECTUS, seems apt here

Is the oil leak deffo appearing in front of the r/h cylinder?

The oil filler on the r/h cylinder has two rubber o rings that can weep a bit and its a bugger to see where its coming from but you notice it behind the r/h cylinder..........
