Maintenance masterclass sounds like a bit of an oxymoron from someone who checks his oil once in a blue moon lol...
Ok - yes, the 'Masterclass' will soon be returning, so watch this space for more details.
Re. the original thread...
Whichever method you use to check, it needs to be consistent ... There's no argument that the first check must be made according to the Word of BMW to ensure that the correct volume of oil is in circulation - end of.
BUT ... as has been said, check it hot per the manual, then once it's cold check it again to see if there's any appreciable difference in level.
There's logic in checking it cold; it's easier for a start - how many of us would let the bike sit at idle until the fan comes on then let, it stand for a further minute ... bollocks to that every time you want to go for a ride.. Then of course if the oil level is low to start with, you're running it up to temp for a good few minutes with potential oil starvation risk there ... Of course we would never let our oil get that low though ... would we?
Yeah - I'm lazy with my checks, but I also know that my bike uses next to no oil at all now, and without any visible sign of a leak, or vast plumes of smoke behind me, that the level will not change significantly ...
I'm off up to the garage ... I might just check my oil while I'm there lol..
