Oil level sight glass

It is a push/interference fit. This basically means the rubber housing that the sight glass is in is slightly bigger that the hole it gets pressed into :thumb2

Yes, under certain conditions they can fall out.

If you are worried give Vern a shout.

They can pop out under some conditions, refitting one is simple but I have a retainer on my bike made by Vern.

You can just make it out on this photo, yes oil levels a tad low I know... yawn.

Ok, so the new fitting might keep it in place, but what if the rubber is fubar anyway??
Will it not fail regardless?

They tend not to leak..... but there have been cases where excessive heat can cause them to pop out.

Bought my first GS with an oil window that was leaking. Rode all the way back from Shrewsbury to London and only after read stories of them popping out (only when they were weeping already)

Very easy to replace. If it's weeping then hike it out and fit a new one

What holds this in place, and is it likely to fall out under certain conditions?

It's not worth worrying about.

Those who do are the same ones who have lockable oil filler caps because they heard a story from a bloke whose brother's dentist had a paper boy whose dad had his filler cap stolen :blast

Get on with your life....have dirty sex, drink too much for your doctor's liking, ride too fast and eat fatty lamb.........never forget that a bacon sandwich every few days is infinitely better than living with the advanced dementia that you might avoid 20 years ahead by cutting down on all of that good shit that makes life worth living :beerjug:

Uncle Fester. You don't mention of yours is leaking?

(if it's not, you can go for the bacon sandwich and forget about it )

They don't have to be leaking. You don't have to leave the bike ticking over for ages.Mine and another one I know of have fallen out without reason. It's not something to worry about, but if it does fall out in the middle of nowhere,or on the motorway at 90mph,then it can be a real spoiler.

Following your line of thought,if you don't carry a puncture kit, then you'll never get a flat and if you never carry a spare bulb, you'll never have a light blow.

And 200k on god knows how many different oilheads means feck all. It's possible you could have done all those miles and never worn a tyre out! I've done 400k on mine in 19 years and it fell out once. That's enough for me to be going on with.

Mate of mine started up his r1150rt on the centre stand and left it ticking whilst he popped into the house to pick up his lid and gloves, in the 2 to 3 minutes it took the bike had popped its oil sight glass ,spewed its oil all over the garage floor and died .

If there is any oil mist around the outside of the glass or discolouration /corrosion of the engine paint (staining) around the glass I would pull the old one, clean up the seal housing and fit a new one

Oh I do all of the above, with the exception of the dirty sex ( been single for a while), but would be grateful if someone can point me in the direction of an obliging female, and I'll ride too fast to get there, and have a bacon sandwich afterwards :thumb:drool

I just carry a spare sight glass, litre of oil instead:D

Plus a oil fillcap and insert:P
