Mine, at only 2,200 miles, has gone sort of Reddish/Opaque inside making the level invisible. Is there a way of getting my finger down to wipe it or is there a way to remove/refit the sight glass. Seems a silly idea to me to have to lie on the floor with a torch to check oil level, whatever happened to the jolly old Dip Stick (no, Wally, not me  )

Hi Rob,
You can only remove the sight glass by breaking the 'glass' and prising the whole assembly out. It's then a matter of cleaning the recess and tapping in a new 'glass' using a socket the same diameter as the outside of the fitting. Obviously you need to drain the oil and obtain a new fitting before taking the old one out!
Some people advise using a gasket cement around the outside of the new fitting to make sure it seals, although I've never bothered with cement, just a smear of clean engine oil.

Never done it myself, but I wouldn't have thought you'd need to drain the oil - just lie the bike on its right hand side, on an old bit of carpet or something to avoid scuffs.

Hello again Rob,
Another thought that occured after I'd posted my reply was, why is the glass so discoloured after only 2,200 miles. I changed the sight glass in my 1100 last May, I've done about 12,000 miles since and the level is still readable from some distance away.
Cheers BV

Rob,

as the bike is new why not get the dealer to replace it under warranty?

BTW have you fully recovered yet?

Cheers
Dave

But surely the broken glass would then drop into the oil, so you'd end up draining it anyway. :nenau

It's plastic, not glass. Anyway it's a sealed unit, so nothing will fall into the engine.

GPS is red. Sure it's not just full to brim with oil???? :nenau
