Hi Folks

I've got to change the oil level sight glass,is it as straight forward as it looks or are there any tips I need to know? (beside not leaving the bike on the side stand :augie.) it'll be much appreciated. :thumb2

As per Steptoe......

The oil sight "glass is a unit, not just a window.

Buy a new replacement and you'll see what i mean. The face is plastic not glass, and you can't knock any in the engine because it's a semi-sealed "unit" with a metal body.

Just knock a small screwdriver type instrument into the plastic face and lever it out.
Repace using a suitable sized socket, and tap into place.

Also do a search on "oil level sight glass"

Clean the area about it meticulously

If you're careful and lean the bike t'other way from sidestand (just enough so the oil is gone from the window) you can drill a 3mm hole BUT not all the way through (Yet) and insert a good selftapper pick a bit where it'll grab a bit of the metal disc inside

Clean the plastic swarf away and scoosh a dose of lubricant aound the rubber seal bit and gently increase your pulling force on the screw (with plyers / mole grips holding it)it should start to move and pop out.

Get a good clean socket a couple of mm smaller than the outer edge of the new window assembly and set it all in nice and square and tap it home till you get it approx the same depth in as the old one was.

Try not to drill thru and get plastic crap in the block or go mad and punch a screwdriver through it.

I don't know how Steptoe does it but I manage with that method It works for me Up to you (Usual Disclaimer applies here Folks :aidan if ya ain't sure don't do it)

Have fun LINKY

Seal puller - hit it through plastic lense, hook it inside and pull it out.

Approx 10 seconds.

Or a screwdriver, and lever it out. 12 seconds. :rob

Just done mine as it had a crack in it and was weeping. What a bastard job!

Lever it out in 12 seconds?! Took me about 20 minutes with a screwdriver then a tyre lever and a rubber mallet.

Just ordered a seal puller for the next time (£3.95 + £3 pp on eBay).

Don't think the crash bars help too much...

Put four or five tablespoons of bicarb of soda down the airbox and the fekker should blow out about 3.8 seconds later :D
