Yup ... good ride and get the engine well hot. Leave ticking over until the fan cuts in. Switch off and then dip the oil level.

Level ground of course and don't screw the dip stick in ... just wipe and dip without engaging the threads.

Sounds a bit of a fuss but it doesn't tell fibs like the 1150 oil level window!

Has anyone actually done a comparison between hot and cold reading getting it hot can be a bit of a faff if you just want to check the level without riding miles.

Not really a comparison, but after the 600 service I put the bike on the stand cold, cleaned the dip stick and checked the oil level, it was just below max so I have checked my oil levels the same way since. It was the same after the 6600,12600 services form different dealers. Its much easier when cold, all the oil is in the sump, not spread about the bikes internals, and you can check it before a weekend run without pissing off the neighbors. The warming up till the fan starts is such a pain.
BMW make checking the oil so difficult on all their bikes, I agree with Micky on the 1150, sometimes the oil vanished only to re appear after topping it up and over filling. The F650 single was probably the worst.
