I used to get very anxious about oil levels. My 1100GS would 'use' oil one trip and placed in exactly the same spot put more back next time! Before I twigged this I over topped it up and later blew a head gasket. My 1150 did the same and although it's irritating so does my new 1200 (varying between 1/2 a sight glass). So long as it doesn't go below the level I don't worry but top up cautiously 'cos you can't trust the thing exactly. Oil does get hung up somewhere (cooler as someone suggests probably). A dip stick really would not help as the level would still fluctuate. At least when its on the side stand you can see some oil is there! and there is actually a lot below the sight glass ~ not that you should deliberately do this!
