Oil light at low revs

Anybody ever had the oil light come on at low revs (about 30 mins into a ride). Disappears straight away with a little bit of throttle and oil level is fine. Any ideas what is broke? The right hand heated grip died at about the same point but I am pretty sure that is not connected

First thing to do is change the engine oil and filter in the hope that someone used 5W30 instead of 20W50. Failing that its either the oil pump or the crankshaft bearings, all of which cost more than I want to know about.

i had the very same problem on my 03 1150 adv but mine happened if i was slowing down for a roundabout etc, soon as i applied throttle it went off, so i changed the oil an filter and it was ok, but i did have a leaking oil pressure switch at the time so i changed that aswell, i`d have a look at that before i worried to much, if you dont know its just under the left hand cylinder and it leaks from around the white enamel shroud,,. hope this helps ....

if the oil and filter doesn't sort it next look at the sender unit. If that doesn't cure it get a bank loan cos its gona cost £££££

Oil pressure sensor that drifted for any reason out of its normal range maybe? However, I don't know if the sensors used on the GS have a habbit of failing like this or if they are more like they either work or they don't.

Would not be bad for you anyway, most likely much cheaper than something mechanical.

I've got the same problem and I suspect the big ends as there's a suspicious rattle and I'm sure it vibrates more than it used to.

These things happen gradually so its difficult to be sure.

There's also an oil pressure relief valve and a thermostat, not sure if these played up if you'd get the warning come up.

Check the simple, cheap things first.

As they say, pray it's the sender unit or the wrong oil.

Pressure is lowest when the bike is hot and engine just ticking over, is the temp' gauge showing something sensible or are you running very, very hot?

Swap the sender for a new one, they can fail and give the impression the oil pressure has been lost or is lower than it actually is

If you are handy you could check the oil pressure with a proper oil pressure gauge if you can plumb one into the existing sender hole.

I'd suggest you don't ride the bike until you know if it's false alarm or not.

Sent to the experts....

No other abnormal indications just an oil light at low revs. Oil level is right....went into Bahnstormer's in the end and they are going to replace the sensor...and would you believe that is outside the extended warranty. Typical. And the heated grip that failed too.. Ah well, have my moneies worth out of them 4 or 5 times over with a holed piston and a cracked subframe

I just wish they had just got on with the jobs I told them to do instead of waiting for permission and leaving me without my machine this week. Car is so rubbish for negotiating the M6 on a Friday!
