Hi everyone,
I've had a look can't see issues about this before.
Red oil light flashing at idle and graunching noise. Whele thinks it's an oil pump failure.
Any ideas and previous experience anyone?
It's the 800, 22K, not heard of oil pump failures before?
After so many problems early on, I've been enjoying trouble-free riding for ages.
Thanks, rin_sun

Ooooh - i don't like the sound of that!

If it was me I'd be draining the oil to check for any nasty bits ... graunching noises are never good news.

Otherwise it's back to your dealer ... are you still in warranty?

It doesn't have to be oil pump failure - it could be worse!

As Greggers suggests, drop the oil and see what comes out. If it's clean enough, try to find out is the oil pressure switch is working properly either by swapping it for a known good one or by hooking up an oil pressure gauge.

If you do have bits in the oil, it could be that something in the engine is soooo knackered that the oil pump can't deliver enough oil to get the pressure up.

:hammer

We left it outside the dealers …

They're on holiday (we're in Germany, and it's Easter so not open on Saturday this week), so i shall ring them on Tuesday and explain where it's appeared from and say Help!
They have worked on it before and I was very pleased with the service. They even did a chain recall though I'd bought it in England
Sadly it is out of warranty, so I'm expecting a big bill.
Whele realised that something was up when he was riding it and stopped pretty quickly. He was certain it must be low on oil, but it's never needed topping up while I've owned it (3 years), just gets filled at oil change.
The light flashes at idle but goes out once running. The noise is bad though, enough for it to say stop don't ride me!

Same problem here and same time of year... Happened day 1 of my EU odyssey! Everywhere shut for bank holiday. Light comes on when idle, switch off engine resets light and runs fine. Has plenty of oil and dipstick looks clean from service a couple of months ago. Except grinding noise, especially over 40-50mph. Taking it to BMW in Velp, Netherlands - hope they do bikes. Hope it ain't gonna be too much wrong! It has been stupid hot though and luggage means she's working hard. But apart from the noise it's perfect no power loss whatsoever!

Seems identical

Hi Stephen,
Keep me posted. Whele says no power loss noise about 4 thousand revs. Drives fine, but scared to drive it! So it's outside the dealers waiting for them to open tomorrow.
How old is your bike (out of warranty?), how many miles.

Well... my trip is over before it begun! Took it to the BMW dealer in Elstm Netherlands, theyère 9'0% sure its the 'big end'... that's the best part of 600Euros in labour costs they reckon, not inc parts. I'm hoping that its the other 10% and it's something cheaper an quicker to fix. They advised me not to ride it as it could completely F@$K up the engine - writing it off! So I'm holed up in a hostel and in the process of getting me an the bike back to blighty. It's a 2008 with 31K miles and no warranty. At least I got to see some of the Arnhem battlefileds! Will keep you posted.

What a complete nightmare stephen.stallebrass. Really sorry to hear that. Seriously bad luck. I wish you well.

Oh no!

Sorry to hear that has ruined your trip. We were hoping to go to Italy but not set off.
They're going to let me know tonight what they think is wrong with mine … so I'm waiting in suspense.

No news yet

Mine's a 2008 as well.
I'm still waiting to hear the verdict.

Turns out it's not the 'big end', simply a seized fan, which is now free - it may need replacing later but everything seems fine now. Need to take it on a long run to check it out but it's looking good. Do need to work on the steering head bearing (head racers) though. Thank you Balderston's BMW Peterborough and Robbin in particular, for not charging me the hours diagnostic labour.

So what does that mean for the BMW garage in Elst, Netherlands... liars, cheats and or imbeciles? I ended my trip early and was towed home based on their shitty advice and I need not have done. I could be in Switzerland now, instead I'm here in Blighty. Nevermind, I'm relieved its nothing big. Just have to quench my thirst with a ride around the British Isles after I've got it ship shape again. New job starts soon anyway...

How's yours looking rin_sun, any verdict yet?

I would say liars and cheaters and they tried to ripp you off.It is so easy to say :blagblah and charge you a fortune after fixing a simple problem.
If Iam wrong,my appology to them. Then they are simply imbecils:pullface.

Off course there are also good, honest dealers but I just somehow can't get through "kind of resistance" I've got against BMW as a manufacturer in the first place for their high prices, low quality of some components(I think there was more teething problems with GS8 than is normal, high labour cost(my local official Yamaha dealer charges £40/hour,my local BMW dealer £80 or £85.Do BMW technicians work at double speed?I doubt it.

Bad news for mine!

After waiting all this time I got the news. New engine required.
Since it's not in the UK I'm supposed to pay €7500 and then see if BMW will consider a goodwill gesture contribution. If it were in the UK they would consider first and I'd pay afterwards depending on what they were suggesting. So what to do? That's almost as much as a new bike. I am really sad it's a super bike to ride. But I can't ride off confidently on trips on a bike that has let me down so often. Don't know yet what caused the bearings to go.
I'm in the process of enquiry as the best course of action. I really hope BMW will help. The bike is in bits in Germany.
Not happy.
Glad yours turned out not serious.

I'm SOOoo glad i deviated at the last minute and bought a .....

Blimey that must be getting on £6,500..... I'd spend that on a good secondhand one and sell the other one in bits.

Good choice, only let down by it not being black.
