Oil loss over 1k miles?

How much oil should I lose in 1k miles?

In March 2014 my 2009 GSA had its first 6k mile service at local dealer, and I've since ridden about 1k miles. About a week ago I noticed the oil warning light come on, so I started monitoring the levels each day. Today I've had to top up the oil as the level was as the photo below (photo taken on centre stand), is this amount of oil loss normal?

800ml per 1000kms (625 miles) ............... is accepted by BMW and not considered excessive:cool:

It really depends on usage, you can do 1,000 motorway miles with no use at all. If you are blasting up and down mountain roads, lots of engine braking it can drink quarter a litre pretty quickly !
 
At 7k it is not run in , I found on my 1150 and 1200 oil consumption dropped as the miles increased
 
Mine was near the top of the window when we left for Normandy the other week... 500 mille day and it was a quarter of the way up...topped it up and it doesn't appear to have used any at all for the next 500 .....
 
My 2010 GS has done 8,500 miles and still drinks the stuff. As buncobooth said if I'm away cruising in the rain i don't burn any but riding it properly still burns it. I just check it every so often and top up. I hope one day it will be run it and slow down a bit but I cannot see that as if it is not run in at this mileage I can't imagine anything major Changing within the engine now. That said I'm no mechanic.
 
Mine is at 34,000 and has always done this. As you said is very dependent on usage, especially engine braking I think. One day in the mountains can use a lot. Top tip - buy the Nippy Normans GSA oil bottle :)
 
In 2003 my 1150 at 3000 miles ,in a 1000 mile blast to Austria would use a full litre of oil by the time it had over 20,000 miles on the clock on the same run it would use 350 cc or less.
2011 my new 1200gsa (700 miles on clock at the start of the journey) on the same run used 1200 cc of oil, the following year less then this year with 13,500 miles on the clock it has used about 400cc of oil to get it back to the mark
 
My 2010 TC uses an average of 500ml ever 1000 miles (14000 miles covered). As others have mentioned, riding it properly in mountains and it tends to use more. I don't mind a bit of oil use, it keeps it fresh!

But I've never had to top up oil between changes in any of my BMs.
 
Just been to chimay and done 900 mls on my , 28000 ml 1100. It used 200mls. I must say I am quite happy with that , considering how hot it as been. I don't know if the 1200 is the same. But from the bottom of the sight glass to the top of the sight glass is only 250 mls. When you stop the bike,park it on its side stand for 10 minutes , then hold it upright and check the level.If you slap it straight onto the main stand,and check it in the morning you will get a low reading.
 
My 1200 GS TC has just under 7000 mls and never had to top it up, and I do plenty of mountains and engine braking.

No not just you, I keep an eye on the sight glass, sometimes check the computer, this being on 8-7000 miles a year, longest single trip 3000 miles took NN spare oil bottle never used it, wont bother with it again.

I suppose it gets back to the running in, or riding it properly in the mountains... :D
 
Mine has 50k and uses no oil. Brother' s bike same age has only 20k. It got mollycoddled by original owner uses oil. The engine still feels tight in spite of 10K thrashing - probably has glazed bores.
BTW bro's spare oil farkle sprung a leak & spoiled a tour until he discovered the cause.
 
The important thing is how you check it. I warm the engine and place it on the side stand, mine has never needed any oil.
