hi all,
quick question, basically i changed the oil and filter on the bike 2 weeks, ever since the oil pressure symbol comes on on occasion. the oil is filled a little about the centre mark when on the side stand. anyone got any ideas?

Wouldn't that make it under-filled when standing upright? I'd say the level is very low so the light is flashing on at times.

:blast Missed that.

Yes, the oil's going to be quite low I imagine, depending on stand/camber etc.....could well be the problem!

Edmac, you should fill the level up on the centre stand....do a quick search and you'll find many recommended exact techniques but consistency is the key.

I do this....

Warm bike (at least three bars on HID)
Park on side stand first, then lift onto centre stand.
Wait 5 mins, check level......

Fill to just above centre line a little at a time.

I'll often run it up to temp again, turn off and check to make sure.

Unless you've got a previously made reference point and exactly repeated conditions for putting it on the side stand (weight on bike, camber f road, identical place on drive etc etc) you really shouldn't be doing it on its side!

If you mean the little oil cannister icon: it indicates oil level, not pressure.

You read the oil level with the bike on the side stand?? As mentioned before, you should read it with the bike on the centerstand.

Cheers guys, yeah i reckon it is the oil level alright, i thought i had followed the correct procedure for filling it and checking it but i guess not. will top it up and see how it goes.
:)

No, sorry, wrong way around...it is most definitely not a level indicator (that's what the sight glass is for)- it's a pressure warning light, that indicates leaks, failure or poor workng of the oil pump or blocked oilways causing poor flow/pressure.

Yes it will light up if there's very low oil levels causing the low pressure, but equaly, it'll light up if the pump stops working and it's properly topped up.

I've also had mine shining intermittently in very hot weather in heavy traffic.

:( pretty much as the others have said..the RED oil light is pressure (or lack of) the oil level is the underlined LCD oilcan display on the computer screen (if you have the computer)
red ones are NOT good...

I meant the icon in the LCD display, not the red warning light. The icon is definitely for level, not pressure. Very un-BMW like, it is very accurate. I still check the oil level glass as well, but it isn't really necessary.

Haven't seen the red oil light in action yet, luckily.
