Oil resistant clutch plate?

Any toughts on that?
I noted clutch slipping today when accelerating with 5th gear. And i think theres a little smell of GL5..

Any tips for the job?
 
Not sure what bike you have so will take a guess, you may find the link below useful. Me I would just replace the lot including the slave cylinder if that's the source of your oil contamination. Just use genuine parts, i have never used those ceramic clutch plates and not not sure i could be bothered tbh.

I would look at sorting out the leak and replacing the plate with a normal one rather than fork out good money on an oil proof clutch plate. At least it is telling you the gearbox is possibly leaking oil rather than when the box goes bang from lack of oil but still with a usable clutch.

Been there, done that.

About 7 years ago I bought an 1100rt.
As per yours, the clutch slipped when at around 5500 rpm in 5th gear, but not all the time.
Saw a new "ceramic" clutch plate one Ebay bought it for £95.00.
Installed with new heavy duty pressure plate from motorworks.
Gearbox had to be stripped to every last component to replace clutch pushrod oil seal.
Verdict: "Ceramic" clutch is misnamed. It is a sintered bronze clutch using similar materials to that used in some tractor petal clutches.
It is grossly overpriced for what it is.
It is also superb, with identical charecteristics to original.
If you go down that road, do not install heavy duty pressure plate. It is too heavy for town use.

Ok, it might be original part then and oil seals will be renewed anyway. Oilleaks must be sorted but i like the idea if you could get trough the season / trip and do the job at winter time.

My mate is just doing same to his R100GS and he did get oilproof plate from Motobins. For him its third clucth in 150tkm.

Its kind a funny that beemer parts can be easier bought from uk indepentend sellers than from germany. These days nobody stores nothing but basic service parts here at north so it needs to be ordered anyway.
 
Clutch looks like quite tidy. Leakage seems to come from engine, theres some thin film oil on that side.

Does the seal pop out easily by using screw? What about trannys seal?

I can recommend Siebenrock oil-resistant clutch, doesn't cost your arm or leg like the ceramic one. Siebenrock has saved me in Mauritania where the gearbox literally poured oil into the clutch room and oil just dripped under the bike but I could ride on for hundres of kilometers no problem.

If you smell speciefic tranny oil in the clutch room then it's gearbox oil - R1100s have tendency to leak in a wierd way - from gearbox's rear seal of shaft where the clutch pushrod goes through. The oil first goes into the rubber (where clutch arm operates) and when this gets full, then being pumped through the clutch pushrod all the way to the other side of the gearbox into the clutch room every time you pump clutch a drop or two comes in till you slowly have a slipping clutch :) Open that rubber on the gearbox's rear clutch arm - if there's oil then you know.

Replacing that seal means stripping your gearbox since unlike R1150 this particular seal is bigger diameter than the hole, so the only way to replace it is by removing all the shafts. It's relatively easy job using a heat gun aid though.

If it's normal oil with no smell then pre '97 R1100s can leak from crankshaft seal since they have only single seal. Post '97 have double crankshaft seals, its much better design and rarely leak even on very high mileage bikes. Remember you need to put in brand new crankshaft bolts if you decide to remove the flywheel.

I was just thinking that way for leakage too, and however push rods end is oily... it isn't wet all the way but there might have been oil comming also that way. So need to check that too. How ever Motobins lists felt strip wich i don't find from assembly pics from Clymer or from parts fiches. It looks similar as in old airheads. I think i've heard something like its not listed but fits and would help this problem. However i ordered it too.

I did also order all new bolts for the clutch and oilseals to both sides.

What comes for oil resistant plate, Motobins listed it for all oilhead GS:s, but Siebenrock only for '97 onwards. So I asked Motobins how is it and they found that they had listed it wrong. Theres now original plate comming.

Can't wait to open tranny :eek:
