oil sight glass,

i met a bloke today who has just bought an 55plate 12gs, 20,000miles on the clock, he bought it from a yamaha dealer, so no bm warrenty, anyway he was asking me the best way to check the oil level but when i had a look the sight glass was so discoloured that it is impossible to see the oil never mind check the level.
so i thought id call on the collected wisdom of you good folks as ive never seen this on a gs, so what is the cause and what is the solution? i know he could go back to where he bought it but hes a handy sort and if poss hed like to try and do it himself.

Sounds like the bike's never been run long enough to evapourate any water out of the oil - This would cause white/light brown staining...

Are you sure it hasn't just been filled to the top of the sight glass?

some form of engine oil cleaner will help

+1 On that thought.I know sight glasses do discolour tho'

Tell him to tilt the bike over to the right hand side(with an appropriate number of people to help)and see if there is any monement in the level.
Failing that empty it and refill keeping a good eye on the old glass.

its deff. not just over filled, the glass is the colour of baby sick/poo!! we tried tilting to the right also, made no difference so i think well prob for peace of mind well change the glass and give her some new oil.

That sounds like water contamination to me,emulsification i believe it is called.Take it back and get em to flush it for ya and check the filler aint loose,missing its O ring or cracked.And watch how ya wash it dont pray down the exhaust or into the air box.

I was going to say my guide is the same for 1100/1150/1200 - except the 1200 has a circlip, so no big difference.
