Oil splatter on left boot

Howdy you all,

I have a question here but needs to explain the problem first. I have a 03 1150 with an annoying little problem where it splatters small (what looks like) oil markings over my left boot and the bottom on the left leg of my pants.
Now, I first checked the oil level sight glass and it is good, no leaks. Next I found what I thought is the cause of my problem, a small oil leak on the camshaft end cover. Fixed that but the problem persists.
I got in underneath the bike and notice underneath the intake neck of the air filter box, where it joins the throttle valve stub pipe, there is a drop of dirty oily stuff with a distict fuel smell. Pushed back the intake neck and found the o ring is badly stretched and I shall replace it this afternoon.

Now, here’s the question, should there fuel in that area? Obviously, with the new o ring my problem might very well disappear, but should I worry about fuel, however small, but enough to cause a leak, in there and can it be fixed?

Thanks much

Have you had the rocker cover off? I ask because there is a small rubber gasket which can leak if it is forced when replacing the cover. If you have, might be worth pulling off cover and checking condition of gasket, making sure it is seated correctly. If you have to buy a new one they are about £3.00.

If u topped the oil up and dribbled, takes a while for it all to disperse on footwear!

I had the same problem on my 1150 Adventure, it turned out to be that the oil pressure switch was leaking. At the time was replaced FOC under warrenty.

Aaah,

Thanks much you guys for the help. BM, I have replaced the oil seals on my rocker covers about 2500 Km's ago, problem was there before and after replacement though.

However, I have some good news. Yesterday on my way home I stopped by the BMW dealer and while I was waiting for the salesperson to get the part no, a mechanic came to fetch some parts and I ride my luck and asked the question, He said that he has came across cases where the fuel can damage the o rings on the throttle valve stub pipe. I removed (badly stretched and fragile looking) o rings, cleaned and (carefully) replaced both sides and happiness!! This morning I arrived at work with no markings on the left pipe of my pants, yeah!! 10 Mins work and less than 4 UK pounds in spares....
