OK any one out there to help, yesterday went for a great ride one or two odd things happend like my tank bag flying off down the M62 i dont think that has anything to do with the problem but thought I,d mention it just incase! but bike was coverd in salt so took it for a jet wash at my local (garage) on the way back on comes my oil warning light so I stop and have a look see, oil seems fine half way up the sight glass start the bike up the light is fine. so I go to take the bike out this afternoon on comes the light and stays on, the oil is still fine any sugestions, or just another GS quirk? Its an 02 1150 GS with just 4000 miles.

Whereas I hope (& believe) that your problem is a result of a wet/faulty oil pressure switch, it's worth bearing in mind that it is an oil pressure light, not an oil level light. If the light comes on, you're well advised to immediately turn the engine off and avoid restarting it until you are sure the switch is the problem, rather than something potentially hyper-expensive....

Thanks for prompt reply Mike and I have sprayed the oil pressure switch (I think ie up and to the right of the sight glass?) with WD40 but I,m reluctent to keep trying it by turning on the motor just in case it may be terminal I,m ever the pesamiss plus a bad speller.

Too much salt!!

While we're on the subject of having to wash down the bike I left Manchester in glorious sunshine yesterday morning to go and play rugby in Halifax. As soon as I hit West Yorkshire on the M62 it was as if a Gritter wagon had f***ed up on his morning rounds. Is this normal for this section of the M62 or do some local authority have a pot full of money to waste before the end of the Tax year!!My GS needed more than just a rinse down afterwards....However I was'nt tempted to use the jet wash and hence no faulty warning lights................................

Nice ride out though.

Oillight

Beesley,
You'd be moaning even louder if you fell off on some ice - stop whinging and ride the damn thing.

Oil pressure warning switch is well known for water ingress - take of connector, slip a piece of old cycle innertube over wiring, replace connector, apply liberal petroleum jelly to terminal and slide innertube protector over terminal AND switch. Finally apply small cable tie to open end of tubing to tighten around cable. Simple and has worked for 22,000 miles on my 1150. Even when i have ridden in the salt and jetwashed it afterwards (every week)
;)

Oil light has just done the same to me today. Coming over the tops from Teesdale to Brough and the rain is bouncing. Stops at Brough on comes light...oh bugger. Check out bike, seems ok. Start her up no oil light. Check connection seems OK.

Carry on, and about another 60 miles later, nearly at home it comes on again. Power wash bike at garage. Start her up, doesnt come on again. Put in garage and forget about.

Mine did the same thing a few months ago, rang the bmw assist number, who after along conversation said that they had never known a boxer oil pump fail and it was almost certinly the oil switch that was at fault, they just told me to book it into my dealer for a quick looksy, but not to worry unduly 'bout it

turned out to be the sender -cops for all the water just under the left pot.

PLEASE BEAR IN MIND THAT YOU MAY HAVE THE ONE DODGY OIL PUMP THAT THEY BUILT ON A FRIDAY AFTERNOON AND AS SUCH USE YOUR OWN JUDGEMENT AS TO WHETHER THE ENGINE SHOULD BE RUN

sorry bout the shouting

Thanks for all your comments it was the switch just a 2 min job but I will try the innertube job the 03 GS has a boot over the switch to stop this problem but it cant be retro fitted as its a new switch also with a non spade connector so BM know its a problem. Chris
