...be in need of some advice with regards to oil for the 1200 :)

What Oil brand should i use?

I'm presuming the run-in oil is part mineral 10w40 or something, but it needs a little top up. I have a small can of Syntec 4 stroke in the garage 15w40 i think that i used for the VFR.

Can i use this even though the VFR had a wet clutch and the GS has a dry clutch?

Whats with this running in oil myth

Should you need to top up your oil during the running in period, use Castrol GP, during the 600 mile service it will be filled with Castrol GP, only at the 6000 mile service should you convert to Castrol GPS, however, you could continue for a further 6000 miles Castrol GP.

Yes, yes, yes, BMW recommends Castrol, am I going to suggest anything else?

Yes, yes, yes but we all know Mobil 1 is just Quantum Synta in a Mobil 1 can with associated price tag ;)

Its halfway down the glass window now, so i'm just 'preparing' in case i need to get some...Castrol GP it is :)

Thanks for the info

If there is no 'magic oil' for the run-in why the need for a 600 service. My diesel motor doesn't need looking at until 12,000 despite being box fresh in january, why the difference then?

Hi
My bike have 10000miles on it now and my oil consumption is to high in my opinion approx 1 liter every 2000 km,I usualy go on long trips and I am carrying 2 liters of oil (to top up)in the panniers which have never happen on any bike I have had before.
The reason is that the recomended oil can only be had at a BMW delar and they are far apart in Norway.
I use the BMW oil recomended by the dealer.
Has anyone changed to fully syntetic oil yet?what happend to the consumtion?
I have run in the enine after the book(more or less).
what about warranty if I change to mobile 1?

Mine hardly uses any oil - "proper" running in has seen to that :D

I do have 10/40 semi-synth to top it up if required though. No particular brand - same stuff as I use in my Aprilia RSV. Seems slippery enough.

I stay away from full synthetic personally - too expensive and not enough benefit as far as I can see.

Like Tobers', mine uses hardly any oil. I took it to its first 600 miles almost as the book said.

But I disagree about putting non-recommended oil in it: why risk a £10,000 motorcycle on a £10 annual difference in oil bills?

Mine like tobers hardly uses any oil ,only put 300 m/litres in at 1000k ,didn,t take it in for 1st service till 1750k after hols, now dun 5oook still at halfway on sightglass ,wat a bugger when i can get oil free from work ,VW SYNTA 10/40 SEMI SYNTHETIC .Trucks i work on get changed at 100 to 120 k/m.My opinian is 600 km gives naf all chance bedding in because oil will be a running-in oil

Do they pay you in oil or do you mean that you steal it from work?
