Hi, I have a 1996 11ooGS with only 50000km on the clock, As i have seen is a common problem i was suffering from a slipping clutch, after studying the relative forums on this site i have dismantaled the bike, The clutch housing was pretty oily inside and of course the clutch plate ruined, Most of the dirty oil was on the engine side of the housing so i have replaced the crankshaft pack box, However when i remove the clutch push rod i see that it is wet and smells of gearbox oil (cats pee) Is this normal ? Or does this men there is a leak somewhere else ? I have read about leaky slave cylinders, but as i have a wire clutch i don´t think it would apply to me ??

The gearbox shaft seal looked ok.
Thanks for any tips

If the shaft seals dry and looks ok look at the push rod tube and boot on the other end. If the boots full of oil it could be pushing down the push rod tube

Part numbers for the clutch are 1864 523 632 and 3054 001 030 for clutch plate and spring. These number are for Sachs plates so you can get them from most motor places and not have to pay BMW prices.

crankshaft pack box?

old clutch removed pic of flywheel.JPG

the seal behind the clutch to the engine?

there is a seal on the gearbox side where ye pushrod goes through , this can leak.
the cylinder has a small o ring that fits the netural indicator that is not replaced will leak.

my clutch had this all over , old oil and friction plate dust
edge of old cork.JPG

cnat find a pic of the gearbox , but my clutch pushrod smelt bad too, as did the friction plate.

not much help , but steptoe will have better info for ya

Hi Pete
Just had a look and yes the rubber boot at the back has leaked oil, where would this come from ?
Also i wondered if there are blots to the flywheel included in those material numbers? I was thinking of just replacing the friction plate as the bike hasn´t done too many miles and the other surfaces weren´t misscoloured.

Hi
The rear gear box seal is crap and seems to always leek (A small amount). Well at least mine does, others might know how to stop it. I just made a small hole in the bottom of the boot. It just lets out the small amount that gathers in it and stops it being pushed done the push rod tube onto the clutch.

No bolts and I would change the spring as well. Its a lot of work to re do it.

There's a small seal in the back of the gearbox that stops oil migrating along the pushrod tunnel.
Have fun extracting the old seal.

this is the boot?

Hi Ugg
Didn´t you replace the Motor crankshaft pack box or the front gearbox seal ? Can that much oil travel along the push rod shaft from the rear ? I don´t understand how oil can get inside the shaft as it sits higher up than the rear gearbox seal ?

oil on clutch plate

The seal at the non clutch end of the clutch pushrod is gone.

It is fitted from inside the gearbox.

This means a complete dismantling of every last component in the gearbox to change it.

Heat gearbox to 100 degrees C before disnmantling or reassembing to make it slide apart. Around 6 man hours of labour.

Regards Michael

Hi time to buy the new parts ! I tried the Sach numbers Pete mentioned at the best motor shop in my town here in Sweden, they wanted £170 just for the clutch plate!
Can anyone recomend anywhere on the net with good prices ?

Photos from oily clutch

Hi a few pics that may help others who have a slipping cutch, notice just a small trace of oil on the outside of the rubber boot at the clutch adjuster,
There is also oil on the inside of the clutch housing and the clutch plate, Origionaly i suspected the engine output seal but after the gearbox was left on my workbench for a few days i saw a puddle of oil that was coming from the hole for the pushrod in the inputshaft, on removal of the rubber boot the casting was full of gearbox oil (see photo). Biggles 12 mentioned that this seal always leaks and a hole to let the oil escape could solve my problem. Would that be stupid with this amount of oil ? or is this normal
I´ve ordered clutch parts and the gearbox seals (from Sherlocks) but i haven´t recieved them yet. I was hoping to remove the rear input shaft seal today, I have a repair manual but the picture of the seal doesn´t seem to answer my question, can the seal be removed from the outside of the gearbox, Or is it fitted from the inside up against a shoulder in the casting and impossible to remove from the outside ? I´ve read the threads on this subject and the answer i seem to find is the box has to be stripped but i´m still hoping that it can be done from the outside as i don´t feel confident to dissmantel the whole gearbox, I have a slight memory that someone has written they have done it using screws from the outside or am i mixing this up with the output shaft seal. ?
Sorry if i´m a pain for asking silly questions.

Well i can now answer my own question, On a 1996 1100 GS the only way to replace the real input shaft seal is to take the whole gearbox apart !! the seal sits against a shoulder and has to be fitted from the inside of the gear box. When i removed the input shaft the little spring from the seal was on the shaft (see photo) so i suspect this was the cause of my oily clutch (maybe the spring came off as the gearbox was assembeled from new ?) Tomorrow i´ll start putting it all back together.:)

Very pleased to see appropriate PPE being used - those fur overalls are a bit of a swine to wash though aren't they :thumb

Keep us posted about the reassembly - I have a '94 1100 so am always interested to see their insides :)

Not sure what PPE is ?
In a few years time there will be someone on this site asking how their gearbox could get full of reindeer fur :augie
