I would like to be able to say that I try and buy the latest technology. I spent considerable amount of time looking into variouse peoples views on the subject and decided that the 2610 gives me the best option I can afford at the moment. I could not say that it is substancially better than a PDA or SPIII option, but then without doing a direct comparison who really can. I must admit to being very impressed by the knowledge from some of the members on the board, in particular Pan European, who seems like a GPS God to me. If Mr European says the 2610 is the best then I believe him!

Andrew.

P.S. The more I use it the better it seems, even the wife is now impressed by it. Used it in London today on a route a I know very well and it found a quicker cut through for me:cool:

I had a Streetpilot Mono for 4 years, about 90,000 miles and it never let me down once, waited (Streetpilot Colour) and waited (Streetpilot III) and finally upgraded to a 2610. Garmin had earned my respect with 4 yrs service out of one unit, so I guess I stuck to what I know as being good at what it does and most of all reliable. At least I can buy generic CF cards as opposed to those expensive SP data cards, and damn that chip is fast at route calculating. Sold the old unit on e-bay for £220 so it had some residual value after all that time:beer:

Bakerman:

I'm going to assume your question is genuine, here's the list of advantages as I see them:
  • The SP 26xx can hold all of Europe on one memory chip.
  • It supports automatic route calculation on the GPSR itself, and it does these calculations very quickly. This is great if you accidentally make a wrong turn - the new directions are ready almost as fast as you can look down.
  • It allows for customized selection of the types of roads you want used in your routes - expressways, twisties, no toll roads, no gravel roads, etc.
  • The display is very easy to read. It is also self-dimming if you go into tunnels, garages, etc.
  • The unit is reasonably small, and Garmin makes a motorcycle mount for it.
  • If you really want to have the best, you can get a 2610 with an internal gyro (a 2650), it will continue to navigate very accurately even when you can't see the satellites, for example, in urban canyons or in tunnels.
  • With the benefit of all this technology, you spend more time riding, looking around, and enjoying yourself, and less time worrying about where the next turn is.
  • It gives you directions in your own language, which is real nice when you are in some spot where the local folks don't speak your language (I am writing this from a hotel in Bohemia...)
Is this enough justification?

Reasons

1/ Stops arguments between SWMBO and you on turn left / right / straight on.
2/ Lack of arguments means a happier relationship.
3/ You don't have to worry about getting lost as Betty will understand that you wanted to have a look at something and still get you to your destination.
4/ You go on roads you'd never have thought about beacuse of 3.
5/ Cities hold no more terrors due to their one-way systems as even if you miss the turning Betty will find you the next one.
6/ Is that enough?

Agree with all the above.
And it IS shiny and gadgety.
The main thing for me is not getting lost in and around strange cities.

eg 3 years ago I got completely lost in Karlsruhe, Germany. Weird foreign traffic signs and street names, and it was grey and overcast so I couldn't even tell which way was north !! Very frustrating.

This year, I had to get out of the centre of Barcelona, and I meandered slowly through the suburbs and along the beach to the highway, knowing where I was all the time, and at any time able to cut out straight to the highway and offski ! And if you DO miss a turning, you can easily see what's the best thing to do next.

Bakerman,

So what's so good about the 2610? Why did you buy one? :D

Also will you be now making the "world famous" GPS kitchen safe for the 2610 :D
