What the best way to gauge the value of an older bike?

I have a 2005 R1200RT which I've owned for the 6 years. After a test ride on a new 1200 gs I was offered just over 3 grand for it ( against a new bike) by the dealer. Must admit I don't know if this is good or not, how do you compare values? Looked on Autotrader and there's not too much with a similar age / mileage. Also, the price that people are asking is one thing but the bikes are only worth what somebody is willing to pay.

Is a dealer service history an important consideration? Mine's been serviced every year by Motoscot which I would say compares favourably with a dealer history.

I suppose should ask several dealers for their valuation but in honesty I haven't got the time to be trekking about.

Any advice appreciated.

Mike

Assuming reasonable mileage, you'd be lucky to get £3.5k from a dealer so it doesn't sound that you're being taken too much for a mug.

Check out ebay listings and sales, but it's not a precise science, just depends on luck sometimes.

Well I have just paid £6000 for an 07 reg RT with only 18,000 miles on the clock from a dealer, in great condition. Was also given a months or 1000 mile guarantee, just as well may I add as clutch was u/s.
So just over £3000 for a 2 year older bike with no hassle trying to re sell may not be a bad deal. ;)

Phone a dealer, tell him what you have been offered and what you want, if he sells you a bike he makes money, but don't waste his time
How many miles has your bike done and what spec

eBay is normally a good barometer of used bike values. Watch a few similar to yours and see what they go, or don't go for.

Basic spec with 48000 miles. Usual issue with duff fuel gauge otherwise it's in good condition.

With its current trade in value I will have to put some money away over winter and buy early in the new year. Realistically it it will lose a bit more of its value. I suppose I could buy used but I've got my heart set on a new one.

As you say,I don't want to waste dealers time so when I've got the funds I want to be in a position to buy if they come up with a good deal.

If you go onto ebay and search on rt tourers, select the cars/motorcycles category to separate the bikes from the spares then select 'refine' your search and click on 'completed' items this will show what the bikes actually sold for :beerjug:

Thanks. I didn't realise that you could see previous listings/ sold prices on eBay.

I PX'ed mine (an 06) for 3k against a car. The bike needed a new battery, 2 new tyre's, 3 new discs, it also needed a service and an oil leak from the front of the engine looking at and the usual duff fuel gauge. I was happy with that!

Not an RT but my 2005 GS/25,ooo miles was valued at 4100 to 4350(Good condition) by a KTM dealer on saturday - he didn't even come out to look at the beauty!
He said that was up to 40k miles then it would be -200 over that , I would think yours is a little low on value but not familiar with GS/RT relative values.

In the end it's the price to change that matters.

BTW the 1190Adv we tried was preffered to the 1290 Super Adv - both ballistic but for me,. £9k to swap for something that will depreciate faster, likely get me some serious speeding points and will get no more use thatn current bike is just not on.
Plus I would have to buy full luggage etc

I was offered £6500 last summer for my immaculate 2011 r1200gsa tc , fsh , new tyres , with less than 12,000 miles and full luggage plus Maxton suspension against a new r1200gsa lc ( similar 2011 bikes at the time were retailing for between £9,500 and £10,000 at a dealer ) so £3000 for a 2005 bike sounds good.

Needless to say I didn't take up the generous part ex offer

At £3k the dealer will either punt it onto a trader or sell for £4-4.5k max... To get that they willlikely have to offer the BMW used bike warranty as well... The cost for dealers is high so they need all the money they can get out of used bikes but the market is alo awash with BM's so condition/mileage/service history will be at a premium...

i think "older bikes " are best sold privately, you will get around £1000 more , but it also gives you a bit more of a power when you have no part ex against a new one , so by selling private and haggling with the dealer you maybe £1500 better off ...
