On behalf of a friend (idling issue)

R1200GS idling issue.

The idle seems to be very erratic. Whether hot or cold it settles randomly but sometimes hangs at 1800rpm.

New throttle position sensor installed, cables checked, throttle bodies balanced about 2000 miles ago and no worrying engine lights etc.

When bike is idling and the stepper motors are disconnected it doesn’t make any difference. Is this correct? What else should I be looking for?

As no one has come back to you on this here is my 2 pence worth.
As the throttle cables are not hung up and I assume that you have free play on both cables when the throttle is off, it sounds like a vacuum leak . The bungs were replaced after the balancing?

Did you reset the idle motor calibration before fitting a new TPS ? Did the TPS show up in the fault codes ? Have you reset all adaptations after fitting the new TPS ? .. by resetting all adaptations you’ll also reset the idle calibration...

We were told to put the TPS on, Switch on ignition, Rotate throttle to max and min three times, Wait 5 mins and start the bike.

Please can you advise on the correct steps after TPS replacement to reset adaptations and the idle calibration?

You need a GS-911 diagnostic tool. Plug in and press a couple buttons to calibrate throttle body idle motors re-set all adaptations. That may have been all you needed to fix your initial idling problem.
