Hey folks,

My left-hand heated grip seems to have stopped working.

The right is fine.

Any idea where I should start looking?

Bearing in mind my total ineptitude with mechanics, should I get someone who knows what they're doing to look at it or is it something I be hard pressed to bugger up?

Cheers!

No easy fix.

I would start by pulling the fuel tank back or off.

and check the small plug and socket for the heated grip wires.

if you have a test meter, and know how to use it, test if there is a resitance reading on the grip with it unplugged, should be the same as the working grip.

if there is, check for corrosion on the plug/socket. Reversing the connections is always a good start.

It's usually the lefthand side that breaks, the element breaks due to pulling on the left bar when putting the bike on the center stand. :thumb

They can be repaired...

Carefully cut off the old grip & you'll find that there's a layer of brown papery stuff around the element. You can remove this, if you take care, & it exposes the actual element wire so you'll be able to see the point where it's broken. Tape the broken ends in place & solder them back together then wrap the element in electrical insulation tape. Once it's all protected with tape, you can put a new grip on over the top - use a right hand one & hairspray helps this slide on over the tape & "glues" it in place once it dries.

A new grip is about £5 but a new heated grip is about £50...

I had a poke about and couldn't see anything obvious, so I think I'll just order a new one - the grips totally worn anyway!

£39 form Motobins

Actually, £58 from BMW.

:(

The Motobins ones were for a 1100 and they don;t do the 1150.

Arse.

grip worn out ???

whatdya mean `worn`. Cut a piece out of a cycle inner tube (ask permission first !!!) and slide it over the grip. Voila, another 20 000 miles.

To do the rubber just take off the balance weight at the end of the bar and just carfully cut off the old rubber. Use side cutters as these won't damage the elements, buy a pair of rubber grips you like and fit the THROTTLE one
onto the element after cutting the end off and wallaaah all done but still cold!. You don't need lube so don't do the old trrick with haitr spray it doesent ned gluiong on and if it has to come off again it will be a real pain.
Fault is probably in the wirinf rather than the grip so have a fiddle with an ohm meter and save yourself dosh,
