One for Arsey - Doc’s holiday take 19….

Christ, this is like drawing teeth.

Doc now wants to:

A. Stay in (or reasonably close to) St Malo, for four nights. He‘ll no doubt need suggestions as to biker friendly digs.

B. Journey out, presumably each day, from St Malo ( or there abouts) to return to his hotel. From other posts, we know that Doc likes to be bumping into the hotel reception at around 15:00 local time each afternoon, so don’t go suggesting the Millau Bridge (despite it being ‘Must do’ location number two on every bikermates itinerary for France).

C. The journeys out from St Malo must be westward, though I guess he doesn’t entirely rule out south and east. North, is a non-stater.
Its good to be differant. Wangerland was a success.
I need to book ferry before our lass changes her mind and decides on a beach holiday instead.:yikes

We need us stuff to see and do…..

Ok, one post .
Doc, a bit like your Annecy adventure, YOU DON’T WANT TO STAY IN ST MALO for four nights.
One night if you must but it’s very touristy.
It’s also very nice but better out of season.
If it was me I’d ride along the coast and stay in Cancale at Le Mere Champlain or down to Dinan, though both busy in season

If I only recommend one place for you to ignore staying in then it’s Ploumanach.

It’s stunning with a restaurant right on the beach.

I’ve not stayed in St. Malo personally, but I’d imagine places like Dinan are by far more attractive, and under an hour away from port. The ferry won’t be leaving until 10:30am. We rode from Rennes this year to the said port and made it in very good time.

Actually, St Malo is a pleasant place to stay for a couple of nights. You need to be close to or in the walled old city. It gets busy.

Great beaches and promenade.

I stayed there for 2 nights in May with friends. We used the Ibis Plage which has paid parking at the rear.

As we wandered about the city we spotted this hotel within the city walls that has garage parking. Rare for any accommodation within the old city. Hôtel de la Cité https://maps.app.goo.gl/2GjURfhQXrH5hTMZ8

Not sure I'd give St Malo 4 nights. If I was in Brittany, I would want to got to the west coast to somewhere like Pointe Saint-Mathieu https://maps.app.goo.gl/LVJiQB1vyq3tuiW26 which has a couple of hotels and a really nice bistro. The coastline is very rugged here which is something I like to see as a change from mountains.

As the French Alps jaunt morphed into the upper’ ish end of Germany, this could well end up in Sicily.
I have briefly glanced/dipped into this just now and have pissed messen. Please make it stop ( no, no, I don't mean that really)

Used to stay in Hotel de la Cite regularly before I had my house if I had an early ferry home . It’s fine for a night

One thing I’d like to say is this.

Thank you @Doc for starting this rather misleading (to start with) thread.

Out of all ports that I have so far traveled to, I actually find myself thinking, that somehow St. Malo is actually my favourite port of arrival to French shores. Perhaps it is because I’ve had some of the best and memorable jaunts with my wife and/or with @Arsey & Co to and from here. This isn’t however my main reason for thanking our Northern chum.

It is actually, because it has given me some ideas for the future jaunts in France that aren’t….
A. Alps
B. Require two days to get to and from, if one has a shortish time scale.
C. Places like La Rochelle or Île de Ré are merely a days ride away, or two if you really do take a meandering route.

Just to add to this Dol de Bretagne is good about 17 miles from St Malo as is St Leonards about 4 miles away from Dol. Its a very pretty little rural village. Both places will be considerably less expensive for accomodation, and there is also a big Feck Off campsite with all sorts of accomodation at it next door at Chateau Des Ormes. You can even ride horses there or play golf if you rents bats :D The area and coast is lovely. Theres also a big motocross meeting at Pleine-Fougères around the 12 of July. Day trips east into Normandy can take you to Mont Saint Michel, Bayeux, and WW2 history, Arromanche still has bits of the remains of a Mulberry Harbour which you can access at low tide (and a couple of Museums) and Pointe Du Hoc West of Omaha beach is worth a visit. West into Brittany and Cancale for the Moules, St Cast for the seaside and Dinan (for the Gravity defying timber framed buildings) are all worth a look as is Cap Frehel and beyond on round the coast for scenery. :D

All look very nice thanks Martin. Having a look they all look doable for a days ride out if i stayed maybe in Cancale where you recommended.
Unless we stayed a night at maybe St Trinité sur Mer.

I dread to think how long it takes Doc to put his undercrackers on each morning.
Reminds me of that joke about the Essex girl who thought the C&A label in her knickers was to help her put them on the right way round.....

Apologies.

On a more serious note, wow I had no idea there were such attractive places in Brittany. Arsey those pics give a real flavour for the place. Nice one. :thumb2 :thumb2

Who'd had thought it, ehh?
You could be on an overnight Brit ferry, heading out of Portsmouth, disembark by 9am in St. Malo, and be on your merry way pottering about Brittany, until sun would start going down*.
Just shows, you really do not have to go far inland to have a good time if you haven't ten days to spare.

* in Doc' case, that be an early afternoon, with a glass of chilled rose in hand and his big toe testing the pool water temperature.

We went up to Brittany last August to escape the heatwave here. Escaping the heat worked well but the whole area was heaving with tourists. Wouldn’t go back in July or August.

They are certainly not doable in a day unless you want to be riding 12 hours . Unless of course you just blat from A to B to C ignoring the meandering coast.
Hence my suggestion to stay in Ploumanach
