I've had these boots for an age, and never really questioned why they have these extra hooks on the upper tongue.

The hooks revolve, so could point either up or down. Any ideas from those in the know??

Doubt it's going to change my life, but I am curious.

To hook the lace through, to tie higher? If I was faced with a firing squad and had to guess in order to save my life :D But I would now be dead…..

The answer is out there in Google land….

Hey Google, tell me: hook on tongue of walking boot?

Fast forward to about three minutes, to save listening to the bod droning on….

I saw that one - that's a stud rather than a hook and I was unconvinced.

I have had boots with those, and just assumed it makes the laces cross in the best place not to impede on the flexing as you walk.

Watch the video….
We all love a good boot review - Every boot "feature packed" and re-inventing the wheel.
There are actually only 3 varieties of walking boot;
Those that let water in & those that don't.
Those that fall to bits & those that don't.
Those that fit & those that don't.

  • The tongue of the shoe always has to sit in the middle. Often the tongue slightly twists if you are not careful when slipping on your hiking boot. Many sport- or hiking shoes therefore feature a loop or a hook in order to position the tongue permanently in the middle.

That makes sense.
The last boots I had with a hook were some fabric Meindl's with a big floppy, cushioned tongue.
The high leg leather boots I favour these days have a long leather tongue with a sewn in baffle either side.
These just seem to find their place in the world, whether that be central or not.

Eh?
That looks like six to me.....

I assumed it was to stop the tongue sagging.

Yes, but it's still only 3 for each boot.

They’re to hook the bottom of your waterproof gaiters on to. To stop water going down the top of your boots when it’s pissing down or if you’re walking through deep wet grass. I have recently become a convert to gortex gaiters. :thumb2

Not that high up they aren’t.
Designed to ensure that the tongue doesn’t twist or drop. The last couple of lacings drop under it and then pull upwards.

Hook your laces under it at the upper level of eyelets to create a small/ shallow “V” and finish lacing up. When you pull tight before tying off, it lifts the tongue slightly and you’ll find that when your bend your ankle, for example to climb, it very slightly tightens the grip via the laces, keeping your foot more snug for pushing off.
