Only firing on one cylinder - after fitting a new battery

After totally shagging a battery , I fitted a new one today. Not the easiest with the access space that the ADV tank affords ....

So battery fitted. Turn on the ignition - rotate the throttle twice, as it says in the Haynes manual.

And fire her up ... well, I seem to have got a small petrol leak (for the first few seconds) ... and only the left hand cylinder fires up... and obviously running a s rough as a dog ( well it would !!)
What the hell have I done !!

Any suggestions?
