I have a small digital camcorder which records videos and pictures to a SD ca rd.

I have just copied some photos (jpg) to my laptop. All are fine with one exception. One photo shows up on the camcorder as a full picture. It shows up as a thumbnail on the laptop as a full picture. But when I open it only the top half of the picture displays.

I have also tried connecting the camcorder to the TV - same problem, only half a picture displays.

Any ideas as to how I can sort this? If I can?

Inside a JPEG, besides the full image data, exists a bunch of text, and a thumbnail image.

What the camcorder shows is the thumbnail image. (as well as Windows on the laptop)

What happened is the camera took the picture, then while writing it to disk, after getting the thumbnail recorded, only got halfway through writing the proper image before being interrupted...

You don't have a full resolution image, but I bet you could extract that thumbnail somehow if you really needed the image, and didn't care how low res it is...

In Windows, display the thumbnail, hit Print Screen, open Paint (Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Paint), paste it in there, select some other tool to get rid of the selected area, reselect the select tool (a dotted rectangle), select the thumbnail, Edit-Copy, File-New (answer no to "save changes") then paste the thumbnail, trim if necessary (Image-Attributes) and save the file.
