Only one fish but...

Another hour on a 1st visit to a new stretch of my local river. Its a field away from the road, but noticed a feeder stream running down to it. Popped myself in and used it to
reach the river.

An island on the river - so a good spot to start.
Best of three landed, not very big, but it's nice just to be at a new spot

Spinning Robbi, started on the mepp, but no joy, switched to a Rapala lure which did the trick.

Leighton reservoir on Thursday.

3 in the morning to black cats whisker lures.
3 in the afternoon to small beetle flies in the surface film…spring has sprung!
Hawthorn flies next…with a bit luck..j

One of 16 Brook Trout caught from a small river(creek) In deepest Alberta, Canada

The creek had been damed by Beavers & the pool upstream of the dam was stuffed with the Trout. Lovely markings.

An hours urban fishing this evening, Cloudy, raining & cool for this time of year but six landed, all in great shape. Fished along a stretch of the river in the middle of a local town. Lost as many as I landed, great to see Brown Trout thriving in an urban environment & an indicator of how good the condition of the water is here.

The biggest of the six , alongside a buried Tesco shopping trolley!

Back to one of my favourite spots for a bit of evening Brown Trout fishing.
1st three casts resulted in one Trout lost followed by two Pike, they seem to be on the increase here. The biggest of the two.

Great sport on the light tackle. Moved upstream and landed 7 Brown Trout in total lost as many.

Another quality hour spent at the river.

Evening session in an upland Reservoir. 6 landed.
1st had a look of a Sea Trout about it, the Reservoir has a stream that runs out of it to the Irish Sea, so possible I guess

That was what I thought. Not worth the effort I suspect. If we catch any we will bang them on the head but not take them home I think.

Jack pike (around 4 - 6lbs) are quite tasty. My old Dad's recipe was to make 2 fillets, then remove the 'Y' shaped bones. Chunk them and either fry or steam, add a squirt of lemon juice and make into fish cakes with mashed spud. Roll in breadcrumbs and fry or bake.

Personally, I haven't killed a pike in 20 years. All catch and release for everything these days. A famous angling author recently wrote: "Any wild fish is too valuable to be caught only once".
