A recent thread over in the 4x4 subsection had someone asking if a 200k miler landcruiser was still reliable.....It made oi larf when some twat added on to the thread that his 150k miler Mitsubishi was still reliable :blast

Ok.
That's good, but the relevance? TWAT :rob

So, a genuine question and directed at people who have genuinely owned an 1150GSA and a 990 Adv......I honestly don't give a flying fuck if you've had a 990 adv and find it comfy (sorry for being so blunt) what I'm after is a real to life comparison :blast

Is it possible to make a 990 adv as comfy as a well sorted 1150GSA?

Rosie falls asleep on the back of my lebbenfiddy, 'cos she feels so relaxed and comfortable on it, but when we took a test ride on a 990, she hated every KM of it.....hard, unyielding, not relaxing at all she said.

That was, admittedly, a shop standard 990 (although our lebbenfiddy has the standard adv seat on as well)

If I can make a 990 adv as comfy, it's on the list.....if not, I might have to get a K1200LT next

TY in advance :kissy2:kissy2

In a word NO....

Throttle was like a switch...even with a G2 cam fitted....( cans and commander helps but dos,nt cure it)
Seat was like a plank..Airhawk would help, Recanzo seat is the only solution I,m told..
Only time I loved the 990 was riding it like I'd stole it...so never relaxed...

GSA on the other hand was comfy, relaxed.....fast or slow...

just my opinion having owned both :augie

Throttle I'm not so concerned about.......I've ridden a 990 offroad and after I got used to it, I found the 'digital' style throttle to be analogue like the 1150's, it just took a bit of adjusting to.

It's the seat comfort I'm mainly concerned over.......if one of these Recanzo seats (or a gel version of original) comes up to be as comfy and secure as the original GSA seat, it might well sell me on a 990 :thumb

You do NOT want a K1200LT unless you are going to be riding it FREQUENTLY

Crank seal leaks and bloody alternators

May one draws Sir's attention to This

I have a renazco on my HP - it's pretty impressive :thumb2

I sold my 1150 adv for my 990 back in January. I would say the seat is just as comfy as I had a low seat on the BMW, the throttle isn't as bad as people make out as you say you get used to it, new ones are a lot more sorted in the fuelling stakes.

I have a touring screen which suits me fine I also have super duke mirrors and get no buffeting to Really speak of.

Fuel economy isn't as good and tank range is the only place the BMW scores over the KTM also the 1150 I fine very relaxing to ride the KTM tends to encourage you into misbehaving :rob don't ride with a pillion any more so can't comment on 2 up.

1150 wise I prefer a standard GS over an adventure any day for comfort, ride and handling.

in a word yes :thumby:

i had my seat built up and gel pads added it was super comfy and the wife would sit happily on the back all day long.

Comfy perch :D

however you will soon get fucked off with stopping every hundred miles or so to fill up :D:D:D:D:D

To those who know who they are, fekk you and the donkeys you rode in on :dabone

To the others, thanks :thumb2

As I suspected, and as I have often (and rather bluntley) told people who have posted pointless threads like this, I guess I'll just have to go out and see :thumb2
Chad, you big lanky homo, I didn't think you'd had a 990 :nenau

What was the foot clearance like 'twixt the back of your pontoons and the lovely delicate tootsies of the gorgeous Mrs Chad?
Apart from arse comfort, the other limiting factor of our two-up ride was the fact that I couldn't change gear without first having to think about it, then having to backheel Rosie's foot from her left hand foot perch so I could waggle me ankle :blast

Not something you want to be doing on a spirited ride :augie

One of the reasons I'm after this info is 'cos it seems you can get an '08 990 Adv with farkles (not that the farkles are of interest TBH) for the same price as an '04 GSA, but the GSAs for that money are at 40k plus, and the 990s are all at the sub-20k mile sort of area :nenau

Maybe 990 riders are just short distance guys, or p'raps the 990 is not suitable for two up long range touring , which is what we need, with the addition of being able to go and get dirty when we get there, which I know the KTM is better at :nenau

Ah decisions decisions :blast

PS Chad.......if you did have that 990 and the lovely petite Mrs Chad whom you so do not deserve was comfy on it, why were you so keen to get back to the GS fold?

Gowan bud, prevent me from making a mistake here......

Couple of reasons really the GS was Sooooo much cheaper to run easier to work on etc and the 990 can't hold a candle to the GS as a long distance tool
A spirited ride would see the tank empty in 115 miles that alone drove me bloody nuts:blast oh and another thing it had this messy noisy chain thingy at the back:aidan

It was a absolute blast to ride solo though:green gri

When I took a trip to Istanbul on my std 1150 with my mate on his 990A, I never had to worry about running out of fuel - he was looking for a filling station when I had enough for another 50 miles.

He also borrowed a gel-seat for the trip.

And his bike broke down .....

There's a ride report somewhere on here.

Greg

So, his battery terminal came loose and you call that a breakdown?

I'm going to chip in here ... I've had a GSA (albeit one of those 1200cc ones :augie), a 990 Adv and a 950 Adv.

As a long distance hauler and for those amongst us that require a little more room on our bikes the GS wins hands down, the tank range, the size and the lazy low revving motor ensure that.

In every other respect I find the KTM a better bike, handling, performance, weight!
I find it better on road, much better off road (although I'm no Dakar riding god)

The KTM's aren't a 'slick' as the BM's but you don't feel like they're built around the accountants say so either.

990's are a little 'immediate' in the fuelling department but a modicum of throttle control is all that's required, they're also a bit juicy when you start to press on, a spirited ride can easily produce mid 30's mpg and 110-120 miles from a tank.

950's are the pick of the bunch though, being carb'd they have a creamy smooth power delivery and on a run at 75-80 fully loaded mine will see near as damn it 50mpg. I can get 200 miles before i see the fuel light. The performance is no different to the 990 either. They were built to be as good as they could be rather that strangled with emissions nonsense to please the bureaucrats in Brussels. Trouble is they're all starting to rack up the miles now so finding a minty low mileage example will be a tall order!

I'll sell you mine if you like ........ for £1 million :D

My final thought ...... I'd rather be stuck at the side of the road in the middle of nowhere trying to fix a broken chain than looking at the small pool of oil dripping from my final drive :augie

Well I've had a 950Adv S, 1200GSA,950SE,1100GS and 1150GSA in that order.

Never bought 990Adv due snatchy throttle.

Still own 950SE as its best bike I've ever owned.

As standard the 1150GSA will be a better two up bike than the 990.

BUT if you want a comfy KTM that's fun and great two up then go find a mint 950 Adv- carbs are set up perfectly and much smoother than 990 so no banging heads.

The money you save on the 990 can be spent on a Renazco seat and a 30 litre Safari tank .

My missus much prefers two up on the 950SE to the GSs.

The Renazco seat has taken me 2000 miles in 5 days without an ache and the tank gives me 280 miles plus reserve.
James Renazco will build the seat to your exact specs /height/weight etc !!!

If u don't plan anything longer than weekends away and don't need the heavier luggage option on the 990 rear subframe then better still get a 950SE and soft panniers such as Andy Strapz Expeditions .

The Safari tank on the 950 SE is cheaper and neater than on the Adv

Had both until recently. Just sold the 1150gs.

Used the GS for when it was wet and wintery, and the katoom whenever the clouds were only slightly grey. Katoom fits me better (long legs and the R model suspension means I am on tippy toes unless leant over) - The GS Both feet flat on the ground and kept banging them on the cylinder heads when went to put them down.

Saddle on the GS is 200% better than the KTM, but the KTM is 500% a better bike than the GS. Saddles can be fixed, everything else cannot. I find the riding geometry on the KTM as being pretty much out-of-the-box perfect for me
